Topic: What's the greatest single live performance you have seen? |

Mine was back in the 1970's. Maurice Anderson came over to the UK to play a short series of shows for the first time. Reece just blew me and my friends away with his musicianship, fantastic knowledge of chords and beautiful improvisation. Here was somebody who could play the great standards almost like a keyboard player would with incredible bass lines and huge chords. I believe that Reece's playing in Southampton on one night was the greatest single live performance I have ever seen from a steel player, and I have seen many over the years both here and in the USA.
What is the best single live performance you have ever seen from a steel guitarist?

Gotta go along with Ms T on this one
I was a big Dire Straits fan before Paul played with them but I really felt that the 'On the Night' tour redefined some of those classic Knopfler tunes ('Walk of Life' and 'Romeo and Juliet' come to mind). It was great to hear the contribution Paul made, but, beyond that, it was one of the best performed live concerts by ANY BAND in ANY GENRE I've ever seen. I only wish I'd been able to see it IN PERSON. The DVD will have to do.

| Texas Troubadors's during the 60's. Not exactly sure when. I saw them and a bunch of other acts in Sioux City,Iowa. There were always a few acts that traveled together as packages back then. I remember on one of those shows, that Bob Wills was there. Obviously with no band, and he used some of the other musicians. Buddy C, Leon, Cal Smith, and J Greene were all there selling records after and were autographing etc. SUre dont see that today. At one of the shows, they announced at the end that some of them would jam for an hour or so, and they did. Way over my head at the time, but I sure do remember this stuff today..... |

One I will never forget was at ISGC several years ago when Jeff Newman, and Lloyd Green did a tribute to Ralph Mooney. Ralph told some stories and Lloyd and Jeff played some great music. I don't think I ever laughed so hard at a steel show. I still grin when I think of those stories.

I was at Jeff Newmans school in 1982 and Buddy Emmons came in and played a mini concert for us for about 2 hours ... I sat 10 feet in front of him the whole time! Awesome experience ... and I also got to see Paul Franklin play with Dire Straits here in NZ at the local Rugby stadium !! mind-blowing stuff..

| Ok, cool, Steel performance. At Tom Morrell's induction into the Sacramento Western Swing Hall of Fame Vance Terry got up to play. This was not in some of Vance's better days but for some reason it seemed like the old Vance was back in action kickin major @$$ at the steel. At the end of his performance Morrell came over and bowed down with arms streched out toward Vance. Truly awesome moment. Morrell was in fine form that day as well. |

I knew that Buddy E at the 1977 ISGA show would figure just by listening to the albums. That must have been awesome to watch.
Another highlight for me was to see Doug Jernigan, Larry Sasser, Randy Beavers and Russ Hicks play a set devoted to John Hughey in Dallas last year. It culminated in an orchestrated version of Look At Us which quite deservedly received a standing ovation from a packed hall. It brought the house down.
