I've been offered this amp, and I was wondering if anyone had any info/experience with them. It has 4 6L6 power tubes and a solid state pre amp. Normal and bright channels, and the 15" speaker. |

I had one several years ago that had a 12" Black Widow speaker, and I liked it. I bought it not working, but Peavey fixed it right up, as usual. The best I remember it was really heavy. I gave it to a beginner steel player that couldn't afford an amp. _________________ Darvin Willhoite
MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

Hey John, I have a similar amp which is a Peavey MX that you'd call a hybrid as it has four 6L6 power tubes and a solid state preamp. Mine has a 12" Black Widow and is probably the heaviest of all my amps. However, it sounds great and I'd use it a lot more if it were a little lighter as it has plenty of good clean headroom and it's easy to dial in a good tone on either steel or lead guitar. When I go on vacation I always take it as it doesn't take up much room in the trunk of my car and will cover either lead or steel.......JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

John, I had one with the 12" BW and played an S10 Emmons p/p through it. The "Artist" gave me some of the sweetest tone I ever had. I sold it to buy a used Session 500. The '500 had extensive issues, so I didn't buy that junker, but the "Artist" was gone for good.
I had the "Artist" for about 15 years and it was always a great sounding, dependable, but heavy amp.

I had one of these with the old black widow 15. I used it as a stereo pair with my N400. It was about the same weight and tonally very good. Slight tube hum as expected. Sold it to a mate with the option to buy back or borrow at any time.
On the downside, the tube sockets are pcb mounted, and I had to do a repair on a track that had cracked. So be carefull if you are changing the tubes.
As a stereo pair the combination was great. |
