| I have about 40 lessons from Buddy Charleton recorded on cassette tape that I need to tansfer to another format so that my 13 year old son can use by plugging in his steel guitar and headphones. I was using a old cassette player with wire remote and a mackie mixer but I need to make it a smaller setup. Any insight would be appreciated! |

Since you apparently have a PC, you could run the headphone output into the Mic/line-in port on your PC and record the lessons on there. Then save the files on there, and write them out to either a CD or MP3 player. It might be a bit tedious, but I suspect your son might be able to do it for you. In order to make it a bit easier to use, I would suggest breaking up the recordings to some degree, then it would be easier to put a section into a loop for repeat playing. Otherwise you might have such large segments that it would be a little difficult to repeat sections without having to play through a large part of it. I think you could likely do that with the software currently in your PC. Although, someone did mention Audacity, which is a pretty decent freeware audio application, but it is not necessarily intuitive to use it. But again, your son may think it is pretty easy to use it.

or you could just go out and get one of the many MP3 recorders that are available in the $199 range,( zoom H2) not only can you do the transfers but you will have a tool with countless uses, record songs, record gigs, record practice sessions..whatever..endless.
Once the lessons are recorded on the MP3 player you can use your PC to burn them onto CD's from your PC if you choose. OR, transfer them back to cassette !

Sony made a EZ Audio transfer & Restoration kit. I used it to tranfer any old tape or record to the computer and burn a cd with it. I also use it and a small mixer to play a track and me into the computer so I can record it to a CD.
This is as simple as it gets and very easy to use.
You can play the tape into it and set track markers wherever you want them. Trust me if I can use it anyone can. Best I remember it was about $20.00 .

I'm looking into the Ion Tape Deck($149), whick will transfer tapes to computer thru a USB, and I'm looking into a Tascam CC222SL MKII Tape Deck to CD recorder whick will transfer data to a computer thru a optical cable and has audio connectors for a turntable($799). Has anyone heard about either one of these products. Paul |

They make USB turntables for this very purpose for under a $100.00 and Audacity is is free. There's no need to load up a bunch of cash in this project. Keep it simple. Greg
