Went out to hear Tommy Dettamore Saturday night at the Aztec Theater in San Antonio . They're doing a show there called "San Antonio Rose" . This is really a first class show at a very nice theater . State of the art sound system and the lighting is superb . If you're in the San Antonio area be sure to check it out . This is as good a show as you'll find in Branson or anywhere else .

I think Tommy is one of the true steel guitar "unsung heroes". Everytime I listen to that guy play I'm knocked out. His tone, touch, and phrasing are killer.

Isn`t that him on that Doug Sahm country album ? Killer steel playing. Anybody to confirm that? When was that recorded?

I could be wrong, but I think I tried to buy a WEBB amp from him off the forum about 8 years ago. I thought I was first, and would get the amp, but I was mistaken. He went out of his way to make sure there were no hard feelings. I was cool with it, and he was a super nice guy as well.

Great Player, Great Guy.

That was indeed Tommy (co-producer and steel guitar) on the Doug Sahm record "The Return of Wayne Douglas". A little detail at the link below, you'll likely recognize a few other names on the list of credits as well.. I've about worn that thing out. Smile

I think that Gary P. Nunn's new album was done at Tommy's studio. His playing on the album is numero uno. Very tasteful...and if he's still playing that Carter, it's one hell of a sales job for them. Sweet tone.

Ransom, I had to read Jeff's original post a few times over myself, but I think he actually meant that as a compliment for Tommy?

Fellow Forumites, here's my two cents' worth on Tommy Dettamore: Tha man is a truly outstanding steel player, and a damn fine businessman on top of that. He did some session work on an album by a still fairly new band down in Melbourne called The Wildes, and let me tell you, friends and neighbors, it was GREAT!!! So, Tommy gets a definite kudo from me, and probably from every member of The Wildes. Check them out, they're a great band!!!

It's out, Danny, and it's absolutely terrific, IMHO. Check out their website: www.thewildesonline.com I've done a few shows here in OZ with the guys and gal, and I loved working with them. I have had to work my ass off to even come close to what Tommy did, and I truly aspire to try to make him proud every time I play with these talented young musicians.

Thanks for the info Mike, and the video is fantastic! You guys should win some awards for that one!

I know what you mean about trying to follow what Tommy does on his recordings! I've been trying to do that for over a year now, and doing that is indeed no easy task, no matter what your level of expertise! Tommy's style and tone is some of the best I've ever heard in my life!

Play on mate, I know Tommy will be proud of you!

Danny, I am with you in total admiration of Tommy's playing.

I too spend some serious woodshedding working on Tommy's licks and style. Many examples can be found on Bobby Flores's outstanding cd's.

When you play at the Southern Wis show in November we should trade some Tommy licks.

See you then, Jim
