Does anyone know the difference in the different length scales? ie, 22.5", 24" 24 1/4" 24 1/2", 25". What is the difference and what exactly do they mean?

Dwight, It's the length measured from the center of the Bridge (finger Top Center) to the center of the Nut (Rollors).

Different folks have different ideas on what length to make their brand of steel. 24 1/4" seems to be the most made, but I'm getting along just fine now, with a 24" scale (Carter).

Hope that helps.

In general for pedal steel one wants the longest scale length possible without excess string breakage. A longer scale means lighter gauge strings can be used, resulting in more sustain and richer overtones. Keyhead pedal steels are usually 24" to 24 1/4". Keyless models have less stretching behind the nut, which means less bending at the changer bridge, so they can use longer scales. Many lap steel players prefer the shorter 22 1/2" scale, because it facilitates bar slants on the lower frets.

Thanks fellas, I will get to measuring. I have noticed some guitars playing smoother and more sustain then others ie some lap steels.
