I first heard this amazing song back in the 70s then didn't hear it again until recently. The tale has everything .... love, murder, gender disguise, surrealism, political assassination and bitter, horrifying revenge. Besides that, it has a great guitar arrangement and performance by Martin Carthy.

I imagine that hundreds of years ago when there's only this kind of entertainment to be had and few people can even read that it must have been incredibly compelling to sit in front of a fire and hear a tale sung like this.

PS his tuning is (low to high) DGCGCD which sounds cool on lap-style guitar too.

He's very good. I liked Fairport Convention in the seventies doing long rentitions of British folk songs like Tam Lin.
