Does anyone know anyone in or relatively near Abilene, TX who can give a few lessons to get me pointed in the right direction with playing. I just recently bought a Rains S-10 and the closest people I know so far where I could get lessons are in Fort Worth. Thanks.

The man that invented the Rains steel guitar, Mr. Bobby Rains, lives one block east of Treadaway (I can't remember the street name right now). One of the finest gentlemen, great players, and a real friend to any steel player, is the President of the bank in Albany, Tx., Randall Palmore. Both of these guys have been know to help a fellow steel player get going. If you wish to drive 60 miles north and a little west of Abilene, to Old Glory, Tx, (don't blink) I can help you a little. I can also help you with mechanical aspects of most steels.
We also have a semiactive steel club (The West Texas Steel Guitar Association) which trys to have a program a few times a year. If you can't get help around here, you didn't ask. Send me a PM and I'll give you the names and numbers.

John Rhoda might still be living in Abilene. I don't know if he gives lessons, but it may be worth a shot.

Hi Philip,

It sounds like you've already had some great suggestions here, but if you're still looking, I might be able to help. I live in the Dallas area, but I work for Aaron Watson, who is based in Abilene.
I'm usually drivng out there for bus call every week, typically getting there Wed. evening, and returning on Sunday morning. I often come in to town early, or stay late to do a little studio work. If you were interested, I might be able to come by your place and do a lesson. You can e-mail me if you'd like to set something up.

Yes, I believe Rhoda is still in Abilene. I didn't name all the players I know, just a couple that have been know to do a little teaching. Excellent players in Clyde (Clent Kniffen), Merkle (Larry Toliver). Another of the brains behind the original Rains guitar, James Foster is in Abilene. Over around San Angelo, Bobby Tuttle. Colorado City, Shady Mitchell.
These are just some we have scattered about. Like I said in the previous post, we try to get the WTSGA together two or three times a year. We need to do another one soon. Send me a private message and we'll get you pointed in the right direction. Bad habits are hard to break so you need to learn right the first time. Most steel players love to talk steel. One warning, if this thing gets in your blood, you'll have a ball going nuts.

Thanks for all the responses. I figured there had to be a lot of guys around here. It sounds like I'm going to have to wait a few months to get started now. I'm in the Air Force and I just got put on the list to deploy for probably 3 months leaving in about 2 weeks. I guess that will give me a little studying time to get my head wrapped around all the theory involved with PSG. I'll get in touch with some of you guys when I get back.
