Back in November we did a video set for Walmart that will be played on the video monitors around the store, and in the Electronics section on their television sets. It was suppose to be an acoustic set and I was booked to play dobro, but the day before the shoot Lee Ann asked me to bring my steel as well. I wound up doing the whole set on steel. The set has mostly songs from her new CD but also one of her "classic" songs as well. The interview at the end is very good and you can tell where her head is at musically.

I hope you enjoy!

Hi Randy,

Real nice performance. I watched 2 1/2 songs. How many are there? Lee Ann is so solid and has a real genuine vibe. I kind of missed the drums or at least brushes, and it seemed like you guys might have also. Is that her call or probably the show's. You played very tastefully, precisely, and got great tone. Good to see you.

Very nice Randy, sounds great! And not a bad lead singer you got there...

Is that the Sound Emporium by any chance? I did one of those Wal-mart things a few years ago but it was an L.A. studio...

Very enjoyable Randy. Just as expected, your perfomance and sound was no less than perfect.
How long have you been using a single neck guitar? Seems like a viable and smart thing to do these days.

Many thanks!

Pete, the video was done at The Sound Kitchen in Franklin. Originally it was suppose to be acoustic guitar, piano, dobro, and bass. She got steel and electric guitar on at the last minute. I'm not sure why we didn't have drums, but I couldn't believe how low our band volume was without them.

Tommy, I've had that single neck about 4 years now. At one time I thought about trading it for a D-10 but now I'm glad I didn't. I Had Danny Bently make a fiber case for it that weighs 9 pounds, so the guitar in the case weighs 47 pounds. We do probably 50% of our dates flying, and so far I've not had an airline charge extra. I believe the guitar is protected better in that case than a regular hard shell case. I've flown it from one coast to the other, then set it up and it still be basically in tune!

Thanks again,
Randy

Great job, Randy! I love the tone on the Zum! You're playin' steel with one of my favorite singers. What amp are you usin' on the road? I love the steel in "Last Call" and all of Lee Ann's songs.

That's first class - great playing, Randy! (Everyone else is pretty good, too!)

Is the Zum a 'Hybrid'? I thought I saw the logo, but couldn't get it to play 'full screen'.

Randy, what a marvelous performance. I'm glad they got shots of the all of the musicians as well as Lee Ann. She is prettier than you guys, though. Roger R, yeah, that's a hybrid. Randy get's more out of a single neck than most people get out of a double. When will you guys be coming to Atlanta?

Randy, I listened to all the songs there, on recommendation from Dag Wolf.
You are no doubt in the top 10 of steel players, the way I hear it anyway.
Like I said on the Norwegian forum, Lee Ann performed flawlessly, her touch and tone is excellent. She is one of my favorite singers, the same as you are one of my favorite steel players.

Maybe it's me who is 'too countryfied', but every song except one told me that this was more pop than country, that is the way that it hit me anyway. Not only the steel, but most of the lead instruments were too much in the background for my liking and it was obvious to me that all the lead instr. were held back in order to keep the singer in the foreground at all cost.

The last song (Might hate myself) was my favorite since they really let the steel shine in the break and the ending. It was somewhat overshadowed by the keyboard(organ) - it only served to make the song sound more pop.

Your performance and your steel sounds great and then especially on the last song where you let loose.
Throughout the whole performance, you certainly proved the old saying that "less is more". I just feel that the producer could have let you loose a bit more.
Your Zum sounds amazing!

Just my opinion...

Randy,

The entire group put on a real nice performance. Fantastic resolution video, and really well arranged. I really enjoyed you getting a Break Out, on the one song. Smooth and right on!

Congratulations! If Lee Ann's personality is half as good off stage as it is on stage, I'd say you've got a real pleasurable job with a fine looking lady, as well as a great little singer.

Keep up the great work. Wishing each of you, a Happy and Prosperous, New Year.

Very nice work, Randy. Smooth, classy, real easy to listen to MUSIC, unlike a lot of the rock passing for country today. What a great gig! Thanks for the link. I especially enjoyed your close out on

By the way, next time you come by the house, could you bring that girl singer along, Beverly would like to meet her? alan

Randy, the playout on "Hate Myself in the Morning" is great. I loved the way you mixed your stuff with the record. Nice guitar and tone too. Do you have another project in the works or on your mind? Love your playing. For all you guys that don't have his "Vintage Steel" lp, you need to get it.

So..... They're not selling a DVD of this, are they? It's a pity if it's purely promotional.

I'm starting to wish I hadn't parted with my Zum.....
