Such a shame. An absolutely brilliant player, and though I never had the pleasure of meeting him, it's my understanding that he was a great guy.

Saw him play live only once or twice - incredible!

He was way too young to leave us - I'm not sure how old he was - anybody know?

RIP Butch.

Butch was 56 and succumed after a several year battle with brain cancer. He was a great Mandolin player and musical entrepenuer and was at least as good a teacher on the mando as Jeff Newman was on the steel. I am sure most of the folks around Nashville had run into him at one time or another.

He did really fine irish stuff I had a book of his
and learned a lot from it.

RIP Butch you were an influence
on many you never even met.
