Got a couple of very nice gifts for Christmas this year, the CD "Slide Show", an album full of some awesome picking by Cindy, and the instructional video, "Dobro Variations".
The album knocked me out! As her playing always does.
On the Instructional video is a Django Reinhardt tune that after hearing only once, I can't get out of my head. I had never heard it done on any recording by "The Claw" in fact I had never heard of it period. The tune was was made for Dobro. I plan to hammer on that song until it is mine.
I love this womans touch on Dobro! I would like to see her do an album of all Dobro tunes.
On steel she stacks up with the very best of them, but on Dobro I don't really feel that she has an equal. JMOHO

Lynn,
Cindy has a very well rounded arsenal.
Guitars listed on the liner notes include a Frank Campbell custom lap steel, A Remington triple, a 30's Rick, a 1921 Style 1 Tricone, a Beard reso, a Fender Stringmaster triple, and a 1937 Dobro. No tuning info, but she lists her tunings on her website.

John, the Django Reinhardt tune that Cindy arranges for Dobro is one of his most well-known compositions, "Minor Swing". There are a couple versions available, but any decent compilation will feature the classic 1937 version recorded with Stephane Grappelli and the Quintette of the Hot Club of France. Respectfully, it was definitely *not* written for Dobro. Here's some info:

Thanks for jumping in here with the clips.
When I said written for Dobro I just meant AFAIAC. I actually think it sucks on guitar, but that is just me. Kinda like Sleepwalk, to me that tune sounds wretched when played on anything but a steel and at that, it must be played on a Stringmaster.
Out of the bunch I liked Tornado Rosenburgs best. I never was a big fan of Django or his type of music really. It is amazing what different peoples rendition of different tunes can amount to. I am surprised Cindy even picked up on the tune, I am way in favor of her treatment of it.
After listening to the clips, yes I do vaguely remember the Claws cut, I just never put 2 and 2 together because of the way Cindy interpreted it. It is 180o out, to me at least.
Anyway I think it is way cool on Dobro and will learn it before too long.

Does anyone have the Cindy Cashdollar DVD for beginning dobro lessons? I have sent for them and am waiting for them to come. I was just wondering because I was thinking of starting a thread about it in case I need some input.

I have this DVD and it is EXCELLENT. Cindy is a superb musician and an equally great teacher. I'm sure you will enjoy and easily learn from her.

Tamara,
I have both, they are excellent guides for anyone wanting to play the Dobro. She covered a lot of ground in the two hours. Well worth the cost!
I would really like to see her do an all Dobro album.

Ron,
Brian is without a doubt one of the greatest guitar players out there, but his rendition of Sleepwalk is enough to put me to sleep. The tune just wasn't meant to be played on a standard guitar.

Cindy does have a beautiful touch on the dobro.
On a thread a couple months ago I commented about her performance at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco last October, where she played dobro with Dave Alvin, as part of his "Guilty Women" instead of his normal group, the "Guilty Men."
Cindy was outstanding, and even more so because just a few days before she came out to California she had just taken delivery on a new Beard Mike Auldridge Signature 6-string reso in black, which is set up with the new Fishman Aura system and the Jerry Douglas stomp box.
She had almost no time before the gig to play with it, and it took them several minutes at the beginning of the set to get her dialed in, but once they did, she played some incredibly tasty stuff!

yes. Minor Swing. It's on the Dobro Variations DVD. I got both of them, but I will have to work through the first one before I attempt that. I love the minor cords. Once I get that down, I'll start working on a variation of Fur Elise for Dobro.
I tuned my Travel Martin Guitar to open G. What a hoot!! It's not a great sound, but just to practice away from home, it's fine. I am afraid to try to tune to C6 'cause the 4th string is already pretty tight. That would be super though, then I could play the Martin in D with my Mt. Dulcimer friends.

Have you tried the E tuning yet? Her Rockabilly thing is addictive. I have several Dobros laying around so I put 3 different tunings on them so I don't have to retune a lot. C6, E, and G/G6.
My first Dobro has always had C6 on it, the G, G6, and E tunings are new to me, big difference!
What is the scale length of your "BackPacker"? With a raised nut, that thing would make a nice little travel reso, or an axe for another dobro tuning.
