I have an old MSA Red Baron that I am going to give to a young man who has been inspired to play pedal steel by the Campbell Brothers. He wants to play Sacred Steel type of music. As you may know, the Red Baron is a S10 student guitar with three pedals and one knee lever. It seems to have been designed strictly for E9, and the pedals cannot be changed to pull different strings. I see that E7 is the most popular tuning for sacred steel, but the copedent on the Red Baron does not seem to match what is needed for this tuning. Does anyone have any ideas how to re tune this guitar to make it playable with an E7th tuning and still be able to use the pedals. Any help would be appreciated.

I found this link for a basic minimal E7th tuning... http://www.steelguitar.com/resource/tunings/sacredsteelers/ssbasic_min.html ... but as I mentioned the pedals do not pull the right strings for it to work. |

I feel your pain. Tuned sacred steel's would only allow pedal 1&2 and some of the Cped. But I play at the House of GOD in Hallandale Beach Florida, and my brother is fluent with playing sacred steel. I just started playing steel about 1year and half ago. I found out that you can play sacred steel thru E9th. He should learn e9th properly. cause the e7th kind of is a waste when it comes to Chords and thats where the steel is the Master Blaster. Chords and changes. I have a 12 string MSA and found 12string is perfect tuned either extended e9th or universal. And you got the best of both worlds e9th and e7th. With those last 4 strings tuned for framming you cant beat a 12string. Encourage this guy to learn the craft properly then experiment. 95% of the House of GOD steelers dont even use there pedals or levers. My brother plays 6,8,10,and12 strings very well, bass and lead very well too. He can make a 6 string sound just like a 12 string with pedals. The MSA you got will be just fine. |
