I bought a cheap Rondo SX with a view to modding it and the first task I'm considering is replacing the rather thin-sounding pickup.
I would like to get something like the sound heard on early country/swing recordings. Any suggestions for a modern pickup would be very useful.
Pickups that could fit into the existing hole in body would be a bonus.

How much do you want to spend? I bought a GFS rail pickup from Guitarfetish.com but managed to screw up the volume pot while installing it. It fit the existing hole well, but I can't tell if it sounds good or not yet.
For far less than the price of the guitar, you have a lot of choices. These Guitar Fetish pickups seem to do the job. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Thanks for the info, Brad. How did you manage to screw up the volume pot? Mechanically or electrically? Is there a lesson for me to learn here?
I wouldn't mind spending up to £80 ($100?) because I consider the basic guitar as a cheap platform for building a much better guitar.

I'm not sure how I managed to do it, but the volume pot just runs around in a circle now, with no change to the volume. I'll get around to fixing it when I get less busy than I am now. I've got plenty of other things to do that are higher on my list...
(like actually playing one of the other lap steels I have, changing strings, etc.) _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

GFS Rail pickup in mine too. Sounds nice but the single coil really wasn't a bad pickup. Have you tryed adjusting it's hight?
