Here is the link to a new YouTube post "Not A Scratch" with another of Danny's absolutely incredible home studio recordings (this one without a volume pedal). Hang on and turn it up.

He also has other YouTube posts that are just as astounding in case you haven't seen them.

Kudos to you Danny. You are an inspiration to many. It sure would be nice to see you showcased in Dallas and St. Louis.

Thank you Pat. I wondered what happened to Danny, it has been too long since anything of his was posted. I wish that Danny would do a CD with the music as played here without a rhythm section. Danny you rock; please do some more.

That Danny, He surprises every time. He's got such great control in his right hand that he don't even need a volume pedal.
Danny, don't know if I said this to you earlier, but you need way more exposure. People deserve to hear your playing.

Danny, IMO, on that top neck, in D, does a lick in there that sort of takes my breath away. Gary Lee Gimble showed me something similar once on his E9th, and I was so surprised that I forgot to ask him to show me again so I might catch on. Oh well, some other time.

Danny is right up there on the top of my list of great steelers! What a cool player! His tunings are a little different than the norm, but I'm sure he could make great music on anything he'd put his mind to. Thanks for the new clip alert!

After retirement, the late Danny shields often made trips to the Phoenix, Arizona area and used to bring back recordings of the Sneed family and share them with me. Wow!! Danny Sneed is about as good as it gets.

I heard a rumor that he likes to invite steel pickers that are in the crowd to sit in for him. Good luck trying to figure out that tuning.

Cool Cool

John
We had a great time a couple years ago, when playing in Phoenix,
and Danny invited me on his bandstand.

Dannys tuning on the front neck is G - It's like the conventional E9th,
except that it is a whole-tone lower plus his foot goes up when ours
go down.
His back neck C6th has the 'Chalker' low-strings D and A, rather than
a low C.
Maybe Danny'll elaborate on this.

Danny is a very unique player in that he has his own musical ideas and
sees them through. A great thinker, and swell guy.

Was it the Sneed family that played together back in the 60s?
There was a great band called the Sneed family playing at the Midway club in the 60s in Billings Mt. with a steel and they sure were good.A friend of mine by the name of Harley Brendal told me to go hear the steel player.
That was Harley.I never heard a steel player that could out play Harley but he was always bragging on other steel players. To show what a nice guy he was some times later i was working with a road band out of Fla.and we happened to go through Billings and Harley happened to be playing at the 17 club.I wanted the band i was with to hear him. There was a young boy with his steel set up besides Harley and i coulden't get Harley to do his thing. He was teaching the young man and would never over play any one who was sitting in.
No wonder Harley was so respected by all the pickers who knew him.
He taught me so much on the C 6th.
He was not into the Chalker style as he would tell me.He did his own thing. But he showed me so much stuff how Chalker did it.I was also young back then and Trying to play like Chalker was a sure way to get fired. Was over the crowds and most bands heads. He also told me to stop listenng to other steel players and i would develope my own style.Which i did later.Maybe not good, but was my own and i did keep working.
Ah, memories.

Russ, thanks for the tuning info. It explains why I'm so confused when watching Sneed's videos. Now I can be astonished and enjoy it more. Don D.

My goodness...I must be living in the dark ages but this is the first time I've heard of Danny Sneed. He is an incredible player with tone to die for! IF I buy a Fessy...will I sound like Danny?? Wink

If he has a CD I want to get ASAP. Have I missed him at the steel shows? That was very refreshing to hear. If he does not have a CD out, he needs to sit and play even without a band -- just let the 'good tones' roll! Loved it... Very Happy

Danny Sneed called me from Arizona a while back to say “hi” and explain his tunings and pedal/lever changes. Danny invented his tuning on the front neck of his Fessy and I’ll attempt to explain it as best I understand it (caveat emptor). It’s a G tuning with the 5th string tuned to the 6th, with his knees pulling the roots pulling up a whole and down a half and also a whole tone. Danny splits the A pedal changes.

An American original!

I believe that young boy was Jim Bob Garrett of the Garrett Bros. Band although I don't know for sure...

Jack...
I have tried to get Danny and the band for the last several years. Danny is big into horses and the show conflicts with some horsing around in Wickenburg. If I had my way, Danny would be on the show every year.

Hi Ric.Gee it has been so long ago i don"t recall his name.He was a young kid,but we were all young back then.lol.Tracy
BTW.A little triva here i hope yo enjoy. If you knew Harley you knew how laid back he was and never over played another steel player who was sitting in.
Any how,you brought up the name Garret which i know was not Bob who played for H.Thompson.
I was with a road band back in the 60s and we played some where in No.N.M.On my night off i went to another club to listen to and meet another road band. They had a young steel player and boy was he good.I talked to the kid and he told me he had only been playing steel for a few weeks, which turned me off.
It was close to Christmas and i talked to a member of the band and told him what the kid said.He laughed and said the kid was only playing with them while on his Christmas holiday from school and was from Tyler Tx.And Bobby Garret had been teaching him off and on since he was in grade school.
I knew he had not learned that much on his own in such a short time.Takes all kinds huh?LOL Tracy
