I thought it might be interesting to hear from folks here on the Forum about some of the tricks a newbie could use at a gig to survive.
You know those fake it till you can make it kind of things when you have no clue in a song except the key.
Let’s eliminate some of the more overused ones like.
Beat on your amp and make out like your amp crapped out on you and you can’t play the song and you miraculously get it fix by the time the next easy song comes around.
After you hit a clam you grab you tuning wrench and make out like something went wrong mechanically and you again save the day by getting it fix just before the next easy song comes up.
Don’t use either of those if there is another Steel Player in the house. He’ll see right through it because he’s used all those tricks’
One of the scariest things on a gig when you just barely know how to play, is a singer that sings a nice slow soulful song with a million chords and they just insist you play some steel in it and you’re a newbie with no clue about the song or the chord progression.
Don’t beat on the amp, try this.
Here is the trick I used and still use.
I’m not saying that this is good, I’m just saying it’s fake it till you can make it survival.

You just noodle around in the down position of the Key chord with B & C pedals down
In this example it is an A.
Just push the B & C pedals down all at the same time for all pedal bends, don’t rock on the pedals.
It’s the A major Penta scale played over the entire chord progression of the song.
The idea is to noodle around a bit with the B & C down and let up and back down and let the bend into note ring awhile if it sounds with the band or noodle along somewhere else hang on notes that hit the spot. You begin to feel it as you noodle around

I picked this song because it’s one that I never learned the melody much less the chord progression and found a midi of it with no melody.
I put it on and recorded the steel with it using this A major Penta scale only, in one take.
It had to be done this way to be an honest example.
I had to drop out occasionally for another instrument playing fill. I dropped out for about 3 bars near the end because I thought it was going into the ending and anticipated some other instrument to outro but the song just did some kind of build up for the turn so I jumped back in.
Honestly I couldn’t even tell where the melody would have started or ended in this arrangement much less having any other clue except I knew what key it was in.
Hint: use that 1st string (a 6th of the key scale) and pedaling 4th string with the C pedal ( a 5th to a 6th of the key scale) in unison and let it ring for a while. Use it early and often.
In fact let most the pedal bends sustain awhile unless it doesn’t fit well then just noodle on.
My melody for the song is “pick a little, pick a little, sustain, sustain, pick a little, pause, sustain, pick a little, pick a little, sustain, etc etcâ€
Later I let BIAB tell me what chords it thought was used so I listed them in alphabetical order. I’m not sure they’re right I haven’t tried them. |
