Hi everyone,
Ok I posted in other sections, but no replies Sad
and I have no idea what Im doing here as I am new to this forum and want to purchase a weissenborn style lap guitar for my boyfriend for xmas. Ive been looking and looking - the amazing handmades, the goldtones, superior, bill asher, etc... He is a beginner player, but has been talking about this for years, so want to get something special. He loves Ben Harper too, so want to stay in that style and what he uses. Hello, can't afford the real antique ones esp if he is a beginner - would sooo love to but... - and can't find a Canopus anywhere, so been looking into a lot of different things. Can you all recommend some? Ive done quite a bit of research, but want to hear from the experts.

And what is the setup needed? He is a guitar nut - has 2 acoustic, 2 electric (including an awesome Yamaha SG1000), but he needs a good amplifier (would be great to use with all if possible), so can you all help? Im new to this, so forgive all the questions! Thanks so much! hope you all can help a lady!

As I stated in my earlier post get him the asher Hawaiian Junior. This is a nice guitar both to learn on and to keep and play if he desires to. Save the xtra money you would have to spend on a special edition Asher and put $500 of it in a good Peavey Nashville 112 amp which is an outstanding amp for the steel guitar. if he wants to upgrade the guitar later, or change to an 8 string etc.,he want have any trouble selling the Hawaiian Junior

Are you looking for an acoustic or electric guitar? Jim's answer is fine if you want a Weissenborn-shaped electric lap steel, but for acoustic lap steel it wouldn't work. Smile

The budget $99.00 Weissenborns being discussed in this thread seem to be a very good value for a low end guitar.

How much money do you want to spend?

We'll help you find something, but first we need to know:

1 - Electric or acoustic? (Since you mention Superior I suppose it's acoustic?)

2 - Budget?

Cool

I got the same thing from your post that Brad did. I think you are looking for an acoustic instrument. If not, the Asher Jr is an outstanding electric. The Chandler brand models at the higher end of their line are quite nice as well. Different but nice. I have played both on a couple of occasions and would not mind owning either one.

I own one of the $99 no name Weissenborn's discussed in another thread. They are a great bang for you buck value and as good if not better than other imports costing 3 times as much according to others forum members. If your Boyfriend wants an acoustic instrument, there isn't much out there that is low priced. They can be electrified with a pick up for amplified use.

One of my favorite home use and small club amps is the Fender Blues Jr. It would work just fine for his other electric guitars and an electric steel.

Best of luck in your search, 10 shopping days left!

Aw shucks, thanks for all the posts guys. I try. SmileI am in San Francisco, and no I don't have a sister in Australia, but my boyfriend is, coincidentally an Australian. Smile So yay for Aussies!

Well, I have to say, Brad, you were awesome! Thank you thank you! Brad guided me through this whole process over email today. Now for the drum roll....I am happy to report that this Christmas he will be the proud owner of a handmade Celtic Cross that he can build with Neil himself. Neil - what a great guy and solid person! After a few discussions with him today - he was totally honest and helpful and even talked me through my other options - I said, you know what, I am all about investing in something beautiful to keep forever. Its like art. And, he doesn't even ask for any money down and there is no obligation to even buy it up until when he ships it! Wow! I was blown away.

So, I am going to wrap up a glass slide, some strings, and the DVD of the little video Neil sent me of Ben Harper playing one of his guitars (way cool!!) and give that to him. Smile

Thanks so much to everyone for your help. I hope I made the right choice! I think I did, and this forum is great! I will let you know how the gift giving goes! My best wishes for a happy holiday!

Blair, I think you went above and beyond making "the right choice"!! That sounds like a fantastic gift, and wives and girlfriends around the world should be shown this thread as a subtle hint, in case they are unsure of what to leave under the tree this year. Razz

Merry Christmas to all of my friends here, and the steel guitar community.
