I recently heard one of the Phil Jones bass amps and liked it, so I emailed the company in regard to amps for steel and they said the cub ag-100 sounded great for steel, and it only weighs 11 lbs. Has anyone tried one for steel? What's your opinion?

This is kind of funny. I know the girl in the picture, Andrea Young. She's from St. Louis, and so is Phil Jones, the maker of that amp. Andrea used to carry around a Peavey Session 500 amplifier for her fiddle before she discovered lighter weight options, and she's tiny. She would lift that giant amp up one step at a time, and even move it across a floor one tiny step at a time. I think that Session 500 was a bit more amp than she really needed.
Phil Jones makes pretty good gear. Some people struggle with the idea that his factory is in China, but the stuff performs nonetheless. He's got some pretty smart designs. I've never heard steel thru his gear though.

The Cub appears to have no mid-shift or contour control, and that makes it a no-go for me. They do have a bass amp with a 5-band graphic EQ, though. That might work. |
