I have to agree. The video appears to contradict the story about the console malfunctioning. Marty Robbins himself appears to be surprised, and can clearly be heard to say "Please get that thing fixed."

It was an accident or malfunction Houston on Grady's guitar, and it worked. It sold in the millions and is consider one of Marty's biggest hits.
It was never one of my favorite songs by Marty. And yes, he happens to be one of my top three favorite singers of all time. Of course they didn't need my opinion, nor any of ours for that matter.
One other thing, I saw a movie years ago with Marty doing it and it was one of those hokey Hollywood takes on Country Music. Anyhow, they showed the steel player playing it on the break in middle of the song and he was using one of the original Boss tones on his steel. That was really cool to see that. I can't remember the steel player but it was not Katz Kobayshi, or Jim Farmer. It might have been Jimmy Crawford, Hal Rugg or someone else. This movie came out sometime during the 1960s.
Marty sold a ton on this one. I would say the new, unique sound or screw-up was worth it to him.

This thread is posted under "Steel Players." For any of the younger set who don't know it, the "fuzz" chorus was played by Grady Martin on a standard electric bass guitar. It was not a steel guitar.

Kelso Herston, Nashville guitarist, headed up Capitol Records in the 60's and also used to do a lot of sessions in those days. Here's what he says:

At one time Marty had a movie-length DVD out entitled "Marty Robbins Anthology." Could that be the movie mentioned above?

Terry,
I wouldn't put too much stock in the instruments you see being played in movies.
Examples:
(1) When I made a "Durango Kid" movie, I used my Fender triple-neck on the sound track. But when we started filming, the film director said my triple-neck Fender looked too far out for an old-time cowboy setting. So they handed me an instrument from their prop room: A single necked steel with 32 strings.
(2) Years ago I saw an Ernest Tubb movie where E.T. was playing clarinet.
