The David Foster tribute show!!

Our beloved PBS (specifically KCTS Washington) has been playing this vapid, horrid, self-righteous ego-strokefest in 'honour' of the loathsome Foster. His pandering melodies and single-minded lyrics are equaled only by his gigantic self-love. Peter Cetera can't sing anymore either, and neither can his tan job. And the folks there who can sing, well, I just don't even wanna!

I feel better now.

He seems desperate to break through to some kind of Hollywood validation of his awesomeness. He's on about his third attempt at TV stardom - must be a penis-size issue. Crying or Very sad OK, David - you're GREAT! Really! Now go away....

Foster is Canadian born, (British Columbia, you're home Province, Mark,) but Wikipedia doesn't list him as producing Earth, Wind, and Fire.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Foster

All I can find on a Foster, EW&F collaboration is the following from their Wikipedia page:

Quote:
For the 2005 holiday season as part of Target Corporation's advertising, they recorded a song titled after Target's slogan, "Gather Round". David Foster and Earth Wind & Fire have recorded "Gather 'Round". The track, which is written by David Foster, Maurice White and Philip Bailey and is produced and arranged by Foster.

It maybe pop,
but he's one a few who does pop with any class at all.
He's more like a tinpan alley composer than a real jazz head,
but he is serious musician none the less.

His work on Lionel Ritchie's 'All Night Long' is iconic,
he has worked with the top of the top, with no color or stylistic barriers.
Artists with repeat after reapeat top hit rising tracks
that usually don't make you wish they never,
EVER went into oldies rotation.

Maybe this show is an over the top hagiography,
but this guy's a stone cold pro a
nd deserves more recognition for an incredible body of work.

You may not like the styles, some no doubt HATE them all,
but that has nothing to do with the quality he does it with,
within those genre that you don't like.

1993, Billboard Magazine’s "Top Singles Producer" and "Top R&B Producer."
the year’s top Grammy nominee with seven nominations,
taking home his third award for "Producer of the Year" for The Bodyguard movie soundtrack.

He produced Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable”
and Barbra Streisand’s “Broadway” and “Back to Broadway.”

From 1994-1997, four of his productions –
“Unbreak My Heart” (Toni Braxton), “I Will Always Love You” (Whitney Houston),
“I Swear” (All-4-One), “Because You Loved Me” (Celine Dion) –
each reached No.1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart where they remained for a total of 42 weeks.

This translated to holding down the coveted #1 spot for an unprecedented 20% of a 4 year period.

I won't list more, this is not getting lucky with
a string of one shot wonders,
but p[roducing some of the best voices of our day
and this is important,
'in the style that suits them personally the best'.
He blows Phil Ramone out of the water, runs even with George Martin and Quincy Jones.

Nominated for an unprecedented 45 Grammies...

You could also pop this guy into a session with the
A-team of Nashville and he could cop Floyd Cramer's style to a T on piano.

Play him one or two songs for a style reference
and hand him any good country artist and he would
create an album of top sellers in classic country,
if that was he brief.

I would love to work with this guy.
Any time, anywhere, any style.

There's no denying numbers and facts, true enough. He has had a lot of hits. However, I can't stand to listen to any of it. Plus, the gigantic ego puts me off so fast my head spins!

I don't know, Marc. I don't really wanna hang out with the guy, but he doesn't seem evil. I suppose I'd rather sit next to him on a plane than Axl Rose (who is a terrible pianist).

Mark, would you expect a person with his credentials to be a shrinking violet, like for instance, David Archuleta from American Idol? I mean, Archuleta's a sweet kid and all, but he always acts like somebody just woke him up. If my portfolio looked like Foster's, honestly I'd feel pretty good about myself too. Cool

I agree with this one too.
Egos run amuck...
I think of star women singers in this category.

This guy has gone toe to toe with the BIGGEST singing diva's
the country has ever seen and had them coming back for more.
Dealing with those rampaging entourage stroked egos,
is no mean feat that one.
His political skills in the studio must also be finely honed...
He also admits to being a cfontrol freak,
as many great producers are, it seems...

It is pretty unusual for a producer to be put forward like this.
And it maybe ego driven, but as said above,
this guy has earned it from hard work and proven success.

I like David Foster's music almost as much as Andrew Lloyd Weber's. As much as their music is a great commercial success, welll...

As Dave M likes to say, my opinions, of course...

Ken I hear you on that one too.
uses his name and influemce and CASH
for the betterment of the world around him.

If he had ONLY done 'Unforgetable'
“I Will Always Love You” (Whitney Houston)
He'd be a hit in my book.

You may not like what the ladies want to sound like,
but Foster makes them a sonic envrronment that
makes THEM shine in THEIR best light.
That's great production.

Not the producers style, but the artists style
brought to a higher level.

I haven't heard his work with Diana Krall,
but that must have been pretty cool.
