I have one of these on a new Williams guitar. Great sounding pick up. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

What are the sound characteristics of this pup. Warm , thick, good separation, muddy, clean with muscle, or which George L does it compare to?

Think of a BL710 or 712 (I'm not sure if he's selling a 10 or 12 string pickup )
Take the BL710 and put more bottom end and more mids and cut back just a touch on the highs and you have this pickup ....Then look at Ken M's definition and you have this pickup .....Besides the other qualities , I LOVE how you can push this pickup to where it "growls " for lack of a better word .... It's got plenty of PUNCH to it for sure ....and I'm not a humbucker kind of guy .....Jim |

What was said above perty much sums it up, and to add to that i would have to say I prefur it over a GL pup. It is a 10 string, i forgot to mention that. I don't think it's quite as hot as a 710 but it's got some punch to it. |

Roger ,
I think it's a LOT easier to dial in than the BL710.....The 710 has to be set just right or it sounds extremely bright to the point of shrill .....the XR is a lot more forgiving and not as bright as the BL710 ..... Even with that said, it still get's some nice harmonics ..... Jim |

I agree James, i spent a lot of time trying to dial in the 710, but I could never get it where i wanted it, when i installed the xlr-16 i never had to mess with it after that. For me the 710 sound great from the 10th fret back to the 1rst but from 12 on i just could'nt get what i wanted, and i found it to be a little to hot for my picking. The 16 seems to be that HAPPY medium that you look for. The only reason i'm selling this one is i went back to a single coil that i've allways liked, there's something about a single coil that i've grown use to after playing an Emmons PP for 22 yrs(besides the occasional HUM) and IF i go back to a humbucker some day it will be a 16 or i might try the 705. |

Roger,
AMEN BROTHER on the tone of single coil pickup !!!.....If I could have my cake and eat it too , I would ....Playing out with RFI and other interference , I just can't deal with single coils as much as I would like to ...If I were playing in the "perfect" space , like in a studio where the power and the surroundings were adequate , I would switch back to a single coil pickup in NY minute !!......I LOVE the older Emmons pickups, and for the modern day pickup , I think Jerry Wallace makes the best single coil pickup out there today ...He won't even consider making a humbucker, and for good reason !!.....Good Luck selling your pickup ....Jim |

Thanks James for your input, and as far as the older emmons pickup, the one i've got in now is supposed to be wound just like they had in the PPs. I bought it at the St.Louis conv this year, (Rebeka I think thats her name) told me it was wound just like the originals by Ron jr. so far i realy like it. |

I have 2 different BL's, one with 20 poles showing and one with 10 poles. I know the 20 pole is a 710 but is the 10 poler a 712 or Xlr-16? What or can I tell the difference by readings or by looks? Does anyone have a photo of this Xlr-16?
Thanks
Dwight |

Dwight,
The 710 and the XLR16 look very similar in that they both have 20 pole pieces ....The 10 pole piece Lawrence pickup that you have is a BL910 which some guys will use in a C6 neck ...It's MUCH darker sounding than the 710 ....While it only has 10 poles , it is in fact a humbucker pickup ... IMHO it's probably the darkest sounding pickup that I have ever had in a pedal steel ...You loose a LOT of the airy high's that you get with most other pickups ....Not one of my favorite Lawrence pickups, but used in a very bright sounding steel , it can sound OK ...It can also be used to smooth out a tone ...It's got plenty of power , but very dark sounding ....Jim |

Ken - I bet you will LOVE that pup on your Carter U-12. I have two Carter U-12's and the one with the XLR-16 is head and shoulders above the one with a GL 12-1. James said it right. Regards, Dave |
