Ry Cooder's new CD I, Flathead has a great new tune called Steel Guitar Heaven about the place where our heroes have gone. There's no steel in the song, but Ry plays some nice swing guitar and the lyrics are just wonderful.

Don't buy this as a download unless you just want the one song. The CD from Nonesuch comes in eco-friendly packaging and includes a nice little booklet with the backstory and all of the lyrics. Well worth the extra bucks, IMHO.

By the way, there is a bit of lap steel on at least one song, in the distorted, rock/blues style. The album could be categorized as "Americana" - a mix of roots rock, country and folk styles.

Just a heads up. Ry, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner are playing at The Great American Music Hall in SF next Thursday and Friday. It's a benefit show ($$$), but how can ya pass that up! If only John Hiatt would join em for a Little Village reunion!!

I,FLATHEAD has really grown on me, and is fast becoming one of my favorite records of the year. Mr.Cooder has combined his musicianship, storytelling, and grasp of America's music into a work that strikes me as quirky, brilliant, humorous, and heart-rending all at the same time. I guess that is all nothing new for Ry Cooder, come to think of it.
It's a great sounding record, too, with a soundstage and palette of guitar sounds that are vibe-ey and vintage-ey, yet captured in high resolution. Ry made this record with the aural equivalent of a cinematographer's art and magic, I think.
And "Steel Guitar Heaven" just makes me smile everytime I hear it.

Same here, I love this CD, it's one of those rare albums that just keeps growing every time I put it on. First I bought the CD only, but was so intrigued by the story and whole scenario Cooder draws that I eventually ordered a copy with the book as well. The book/CD package is well worth the price.

Nick Lowe will be playing at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass a week from this Saturday (I saw his set last year - it was very good) and I'm hoping that Ry will stick around San Francisco to join him, instead of heading back south to Santa Monica.

The bad thing about that is that the Desert Rose Band plays at the same time on a different stage!

Mark, if you care to, we are getting to the Star stage real early on Saturday and sorta setting up a little spot to hang (though when my wife saw that Patty Griffen, Shawn Colvin, EmmyLou, and Buddy Miller were performing at the same time, she said later to the DRB).

You can give me a call, 831 295 2871, the day of the event or before to hook up for DRB. I went to see them down in Solana Beach.....as good as they ever were!
