I visited Elderly yesterday to have some work performed on my guitar. While the guitar was in the shop I had a chance to try out some of the inexpensive new lap steels that are on the market today. Here are my unscientific findings.

Eastwood Airline Lap Steel $350.00
http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/EWLS1-RED.htm

Very tinny trebely tone. String spacing way too tight.

Gretsh Electromatic Series G570 Lap Steel

http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/G1700.htm

Decent full tone. String spacing extremely too tight.

Morrell Lap Steel 8-string

http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/JMP8-TBROWN.htm

Very nice full tone. String spacing too tight for my tastes but others may find it usable. They did not have a six string available to sample.

Yes I did.

They had a Hardway 8 string on the floor and I was impressed with the tone and build quality. But, I am not an 8 string player. All 8 strings feel too tight for me - in terms of string spacing.

Those Hardway's would probably look/sound gooder if they used a stud/wrap-around tailpiece or a standard bridge and better string-thru design.

But at a grand? No thanx!

"Did you try out any of the Hardway lap steels?"

I thought for sure that was going to be a setup for a joke, as in "What's a hardway?"! Laughing

Lee -

Maybe he should have tried out the "Duckway" lap steels? : )

...or the "Horcost" lap steels.

I have an original Airline Rocket, and it sounds mucho "Fat!" If I got one of the new ones, I pop in a Lollar "Chicago-style" pup.
