I think I am right in my belief that the distance in the string spacing is soley controled by the nut? change tunning thingimiggy and change string spacing?

For steel guitar, string spacing is most important where we pick, which is close to the changer, not the nut. Therefore, it is spacing at the changer that is most important. Why there should be a difference between the changer and the nut, I will never understand.

Regular guitar is completely different. The optimum string spacing for fingering chords with the left hand may not be the same as optimum spacing for picking with the right hand. For that reason, most guitars these days have closer spacing at the nut than at the saddle. This convention seems to have carried over to many steel guitars, although there is no reason for it.

What I wasn't clear on, isn't it just a matter of changing the turner mechanism to change string spacing. Why is there two different spacing string spacing anyway. I never thought of a guitar. So, they are also different. What is the spacing on a guitar? Hey I am just curious. If I was a cat, I would have needed 10,000 lives

The most common spacings for 8-string steels is Bridge = 3/8”, Nut = 5/16”. Most common spacings for 6-strings is even wider! The most common spacing for 10-string or even 11 or 12-string steels is Bridge = 11/32”, Nut = 9/32”.
