I'm enjoying Jerry Hayes' post on the Foothill club. I lived in Santa Barbara for 15 years and often drove by the Ban-Dar in Ventura...never went in but always wondered about the history of the place. Any stories? |

Hmmmmmmmmm....no stories but I think it was owned or operated by Johnnie and Joanie Mosby. I saw them one time on a package show at Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento. Matching outfits much like Carl and Pearl Butler. Sorry but I'm just too old to get into the holey jeans shirt unironed and not tucked in
grunge look. People hear with their eyes. If you look like a band you'll sound like a band even when you're not the " A " team. |

There was another club called the "Crow's Nest" in Oxnard that a lot of L.A. Musicians played at. It got a lot of sailors from the Point Magu naval base.
I don't know how long it's longevity was. |

I played there some in the late 70s early 80s with the Jim Leslie band. It was just another honky-tonk with a small stage and worn out red naugahide booths and had been there for decades. I asked the bartender there once what the name of the place meant and she said "Ban-Dar" was a ranch brand. I guess it was an amalgam of two peoples names. |

The old BanDar was the "high class" country bar in Ventura County as was the "Club Vegas" in Oxnard. I was playing in Ventura at the "King of the Bass" and had a friend playing at the BanDar (Bill "Hoss" Huffman). He needed a night off to spend with a young lady and asked me to fill in for him at the BanDar. I was working the same night(s) but I got a fill in for my gig and went and worked his gig the one night. It was a very nice club and Johnny & Jonie were nice to me.
Billy T. mentioned a club in Oxnard called the Crow's Nest. I worked there a short time with a guy named Larry Thornton who'd been working that club over 13 years at the time (talk about a "steady" job!). The steelplayer was a guy named Don Robinson who was a monster on the C6th. He played a Fender 2000 at the time....
At the same time I was working at the KOTB I was doing Monday nights at the Club Vegas in Oxnard with Clark Rohn, does anyone know him? He's still active in SoCal.........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Jerry:.
In recent years Clark Rohn worked a Sunday Afternoon gig at the "Eagles" in Bellflower, So. California. He used to also use our old buddy Lou Martin before he passed on. Clark used a synthesizer piano which gave him a pretty good background band.
I don't know if he is still there. I don't get around much anymore. (remember that great old song ?) |

Billy, Clark's still there. When I was in SoCal in Oct. of '05 Lou was gone and Jimmy Lester was playing with him. The last time I talked to Clark on the phone, Carmine Sardo was playing guitar with him.............JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |
