I'm sure I saw a chart somewhere giving string gauges for tuning a tone down. I find my G# sounds tinny so am considering tuning to D9. Has anybody tried going right down to C?

Thanks MArk

Thanks Stu

My F# first string is a .014 but it doesn't get raised. An 013 might still sound thin, do you think an 014 would stand the B pedal pumping?

Mark, could you explain to me your set-up what you're playing out of?I'm trying to figure out why the 3rd string is thin sounding.I owned a guitar a long time ago that drove me nuts with that problem,it wasn't a Bud though Hmmm?Stu Winking

Stu

There are a few reasons for the tinny sound. Firstly I’m crap. Also I’m playing at home and don’t want to make too much noise. So I use a Roland Micro Cube a lot of the time or record direct into Logic Pro on my Mac. I have an old Sho Bud volume pedal and my use of it sucks. I only use a thumb pick and play the thinner strings with my nails. My Sho Bud has the original single coil PU. I don’t know of another PSG player within 60 miles and I don’t play country music. So anything I can improve will help!

I look at the forum and decide I want a 12 string Keyless Uni and all the toys. That would cost more than a new car here in Scotland. Then I remember I have the Sho Bud which is mint, I got it for a song and that all the fancy stuff I have had over the years didn’t make me play any better.

I have ditched the D string and have a B on 9 and a E (planning a G#) on 10 so I sort have it as a Uni. I plan to put an 013 and then an 014 in the third string position tonight, tune it to F#, waggle the B pedal and see what it sounds like and weather it breaks.

Tuning down a tone should suit me as I use the keys of G and D a lot.

Thanks for your interest and your comments. I’ll post the results of my experiments later!

Mark

Mark,I have a 0.13 as my first string F# and a knee lever that raises that a whole step to a G# so I think that it should work with your B pedal.I think that one of my best friends lives near you in the same town,His name is Son Henry and is a monster guitar/lap steel player who also owns a Carter 12 string Sacred steel set-up son_henry@yahoo.com ,we play a lot of blues together when he comes home. The original Sho-Bud pickup should be fine same for the Sho-Bud pedal.I would suggest getting a hold of Son,he's great with equipment and I bet that he can figure it out.Tell him that I sent you,Stu
