I'm working on the Dwight song It Only Hurts When I Cry. Info I got off the forum says it's Al Perkins on lap steel, and he is listed on lap (banjo and dobro) in the credits (Tom Brumley is the pedal steeler on that CD).

Here's a clip of the part I'm interested in...

Anybody know what tuning he might be using?

Charlie (is a lap newbie)

That sounds like a pedal steel to me, which would almost certainly be E9th tuning. You could certainly sound a lot like this with a lap steel in open E or open D tuning.

That's a pedal guitar. I don't think it would matter which tuning you're in. It's gonna be up the neck, not any open positions. And D and G, or E and A, tunings are actually very similar. Only you move over one string.

It sounds like psg to me too. I was going on an old forum post in the tab section where Ricky Davis said he thought it was Al Perkins on lap.

The licks have a kind'a Hawaiian flavor. I'm gonna try it in EBEG#BE this evening. I don't get anywhere with that I'll take another whack at it on psg.

I'm not sure the part is lap, but it is do-able with a lap.

This is just the basics. I started to put all the little nuance in it, but it got cluttered up real fast.

No way to do this piece without slants.

Heh!
