Our friend Lynn Wheelright - forum member, journalist and vintage steel guitar collector - has a wonderful article in the February issue of Vintage Guitar.
All about Alvino Rey, his career, his association with Gibson, and the 2 "mini" Gibson steel guitars that were a gift from then Gibson GM Guy Hart.
Beautiful photos and very interesting historical anecdotes.
It's a fascinating, insightful read - well worth the price of the mag all by itself.

Yes, a very interesting article about Alvino Rey and his 61 year old prototype lap steel, made of brass! The first electric guitar built for the Gibson Co.

Wow, thanks for posting that link Doug - I hadn't seen that "Crude Beginnings" article before.
What cool photos!

The article I was referring to is in the latest issue (Feb 2009) of Vintage Guitar, it just came in the mail today.
It deals mainly with Alvino Rey's career and the mini Gibsons.
It's a very new issue - they still have the Jan issue on their current issue page.
