I'm not certain about the title of the Hawaiian Song for which I am seeking the lyrics. It might be "Nakapuna Nights" (?) (or a title similar).
Anyone have a clue and do you have the lyrics ?
Thanx. |

Keoki,
I'm missing just the underlined phrase. Can't make it out. Sounds like "Was Getty Society". Could be a name for some Hawaiian Club or local group almost like the Kaahumanu Society Club we have here.
NA KUPUNA NIGHTS:
I'd like to recall, how we had a ball, on Na Kupuna Nights,
But kanes, wahines, malihini's too,
Join in a "wela ka hao".
Now all the tutu's, wore gay holoku's, on Na Kupuna Nights
_________ society, and old timers too, enjoy the okolehao
Grand-pa played a simple melody, on his slack key guitar
Grand-ma danced the "Hula Oni E", and she's still the greatest star
Let's say "Hana Hou", let's bring back the show, beneath the pale moon light
With singing and dancing, just like old times, on Na Kupuna Nights. |

MAHALO Derrick...This is really appreciated. I have so darned many Hawaiian tapes and recordings around here, I know I have this song somewhere in my collection, but where ? If I can't find the missing words in your lyrics, I'll just have to ad lib something. Again, mahalo nui loa !
Oh, can I brain-storm you as to what exactly is a NA KUPUNU NIGHT ?

Keoki,
I have only one recording of this song. It's on the Tiki Records label called "Pua Almeida Sings With Billy Hew Len and the Moana Surfriders".
Na Kupuna Nights was a music program for elder people.
The only Kupuna Fest that I know of today is the "Kupuna Hula Competition" held in Kona. I was there this past September and played steel guitar for a halau (hula studio). You'd have to be at least 55 years old or older to enter the dance competition.

"The show revives a popular event of the early 1960s when the original Na Kupuna Night shows were instituted to commemorate the traditional music and hula of Hawaii". *****************************************************
Nice bit of research Derrick, Mahalo ! I can only assume the word "KUPUNA" must relate to 'old' or a word similar ? With your Hawaiian heritage, I'm sure you could clarify the word much better than I...(?)
BTW: It's a nice song with a swinging beat ! |

Aloha Keoki,
"Kupuna" means grandparent.
BTW, I've heard the original Na Kupuna Night show used to have some girl on a swing up high in the Moana Hotel's Banyan tree. |
