I attended the steel show and seminar last year in Lakeland,FL. Will there be another this year?

Joe Wright gave the seminar pinch hitting for Bobbe Seymour. It was very informative and enjoyable.

I haven't heard or seen anything on the show for January but Heywood Hensen (who has the show) doesn't seem to do much advertising or promotion.

You can contact "on dee air productions" which is affiliated with the show and they should know.

CLICK ME

If you will be down here the 2nd Wednesday of the month, that is the date for our monthly club steel jam.

Len,

I was the drummer on the show last year and I spoke to Heywood a couple weeks ago about the "09 show. He indicated that he was having some trouble finding the right date so it wouldn't conflict with another show. Remember last year, Hicks and Jernigan couldn't make it due to the Arizona( I think) show. Anyway, I had a great time and I certainly hope it will work out for the "09 show. My wife loves to go to Florida in the winter.

Hey Len,

Thanks for the info. That's not the answer I was hoping for, but it's an answer. Maybe next year.

Thanks for the sad news on the Heywood Henson steel show. The times I've been able to attend, it didn't seem to have a very big audience (or as big as it should have been). I didn't get there last year as I was on the road with George Hamilton IV here in Florida.

I've promoted several shows that our Florida Steel Guitar Club hosted and except for the Hall of Fame Fundraising show that Lynn Owsley set up the talent for, none really made any money (and the HOF got all the money except for a portion that Catfish Johnny's restaurant got for providing the food).

Bad news. I was really looking forward to the January show here in Lakeland. The attendance in Jan 08 wasn't as good as I've seen it before, like when in Plant City, and then the first year here in Lakeland. With the right pickers, a good date, and the proper venue, I believe a steel show like this would still work - IF it was promoted. The past couple of years it wasn't.

For instance, a Saturday only show, with a morning/afternoon seminar, and a show that night, at a venue such as the old 1914 Plant City High School, could probably work. It might not make a lot of profit, but it could pay the bills. With enough promotion, people other than pickers and their immediate families might attend.

I guess, for now, it's either Dallas or St. Louis if we can afford to go.

Last but not least, the FL Steel Guitar Club jam still provides some mighty good pickin'.

Ken
Thanks for the nice comment about our FSG club.
I also noticed that the turnout at several of the last shows Haywood put on were not attended by as many as I thought would show.
It's too bad to see it not to be in 2009.

Thanks Don, not a problem. The last show Haywood put on here in Lakeland had a couple of problems. John Hughey had passed away, and he had been a headliner for years. Bobbe Seymour was to appear, and he had some health problems as I recall. Joe Wright was there, and some other great pickers. I enjoyed it, but the attendance and organization was down, for sure. Maybe again someday...

I haven't met you personally, but I've been at a few jams. I hope to be back in January or February. It will be quite a while before I can try picking with y'all though. Meanwhile, I love listening and watching.

Dan was a friend of Heywood's and may have been in Heywood's band at one time. He always played at the shows but had no connection with Heywood and Deger (On Dee Air Productions) who put on the show.

The first couple of years it was held in Plant City and Herby Wallace took care of getting the backup band for Heywood.

Yes Jack you are correct I remember about Herby helping out with it. I lived in Winter Haven for about a year and I even went to the Steel Jam that Larry Self had over in New Smyrna.I remember when Claude Brunnell was playing his Non Pedal steel that he stood up to play and one of the front legs started given in and he kept playing and he was hanging over the edge of the stage. He is a great Steel player and my wife asked him to play Hawiain wedding song and he did a beautiful job playing it.

I've been to New Symrna when Larry Self had the shows there (before Plant City). Claude Brownell and his "long neck" guitar was always there. Claude passed away several years ago.

Sam
I was there with Jack at that Smyrna Beach jam when Larry put them on.
His Steel shop over on the East coast was the first place I checked out when I came to Florida in '96.
