I saw a new advertisement for a 6 string Gretsch Lap Steel Guitar.

Just wondering if these are any good?

Does anyone know anyting about them?

I'd appreciate any comments.

I played a Gretch and thought it was a decent guitar but not a guitar I would consider owning. I also played a Chandler and for a few bucks more you get a much nicer better sounding instument. The Chandler and the Asher EH JR are the only two production guitar built today that I care for.

There are a tons of different steels out there. I prefer the vintage stuff myself for the most part.

There does not seem to be a lot of love for the modern Gretsch. I personally was less than impressed with one I saw down at the local Guitar Center a while back. Its too bad really, as its a great shape and comfortable to play. With decent wood and a better pickup they would have a much better offering.

Here is a Gretsch inspired steel I built for forum member Paul Smith this spring.

I have one from the 50s and it's pretty decent, but I tried out a new one a while back and it's not even close.

Here are a couple of pics of the "Electromatic":

I've always liked those big Honkin' aluminum castings on those guitars. That is a great looking board Rick.

I had one when first getting started. The painted on fretboard markings chip VERY easily. (I'm talking about the new version)
