"Walkin, Talkin, Barely Beatin, Broken Heart"
and
"Honky Tonk Heart"
Great tone almost Mooneyesque. I don't think he was a memeber of the group though
Thanks. |

Pedal steel and dobro on those albums was Tommy Spurlock, per the liner notes.
I have always like the sound of the steel, and the style, on those two records. Great playing and tone. _________________ Steeless. |

I had been under the impression that Gary Morse did the steel on 'Walkin', Talkin', Barely Beatin' Broken Heart' but I must be mistaken. |

I have the CD with Honky Tonk Heart, and the liner notes say it is Tommy Spurlock. I don't have the other CD with Walkin, Talkin, Barely Beatin, Broken Heart - have the song on MP3 though, and the steel playing and tone sounds identical in every way. So, I suspect Tommy on both of those. _________________ Steeless. |

I listened to the short iTunes samples of those tunes and I'm pretty sure that's not Jay Dee, whose tone is quite un-Mooneyesque, IMHO. For comparison, he is on "The Bed You Made For Me", "Cry Cry Cry", "Are You Still Mine" and "Whiskey, If You Were A Woman". Maybe others? |

Gary Morse
Very similar to his work on Yoakam's "Tommorrow's Sounds Today" album, and Sara Evan's "Suds In A Bucket".
He'll be the first to admit the "Mooney Influence" |

I don't know about the other titles mentioned but "Whiskey" is soooo J.D.that it just about cries out his name.....but..I could be wrong. From what I know of T. Spurlock...his style and tone are different(on David Ball's first offering)and it seems he was more of a "Sho-Bud" tone kinda guy. With all due respect..RK _________________ "think MORE...play LESS" |

I'm quite sure that Jay Dee Maness did some work with that group. IMO, no one can play "honky tonk" style music better than Jay Dee, and what's better is to be there in person and watch him burn it up. Ah, the good 'ol days. |

I was just wondering - Why would the CD liner notes say that Tommy Spurlock played steel on the album that includes Honky Tonk Heart, if it wasn't him? No other steeler is mentioned. I didn't guess at that, I read it right off the CD liner when I typed it onto the screen. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had any idea at all, other than it doesn't sound like JayDee.
I love the sound, no matter who it was. There are other songs on the Hwy 101 album with Honky Tonk Heart which have steel sound on them, and it sounds like the same player, as does the other song in question. _________________ Steeless. |

JD did the first album, but the rest were Tommy Spurlock (aka "The Secret Weapon").
The styles uniquely distinct.

It's Tommy Spurlock. The liner notes are correct.

Here's the skinny from an ex-101 member/friend of mine that should answer most if not all of your questions:
"Although I cannot tell you cut for cut, I can give you the general chronology.
The 1st album, Highway 101, was pretty much split down the middle between Jay Dee Maness and Tommy Spurlock.
The 2nd album Highway 1012 was all Tommy.
The 3rd album Paint the Town was Tommy with appearances by Greg Leisz and Steve Fischel (one cut each)
The 4th album Greatest Hits was a compilation with Tommy playing on the one new song The Change.
The 5th album Bing, Bang, Boom with Nikki Nelson as lead vocalist featured an old band-mate John Noreen, Tommy and one cut with Buddy Emmons.
The album we cut in 1996 called Reunited featured Gary Morse and Tommy Spurlock. Gary was on the road with us from late 1990 to 1993. He joined us after leaving McBride and the Ride.
I'm uninformed as to who played on the albums The New Frontier (1993) and Big Sky (1999). They were cut after I was gone."

I fortunately taped a segment of "On Stage" which was a live showcase on TNN featuring different groups. One was an appearance by the original Highway 101 around the time "Paint the Town" was released. The steel player was playing an MSA Classic, rosewood finish with pearl tuner buttons. He himself wore a beard and if I remember a beret.
Would that have been Gary Morse? |
