Gibson started these in 1987.

http://vintage-guitars.blogspot.com/2005/11/gibson-chet-atkins.html

And here are the last ones made in Memphis in the 2000s'

http://www.guitar.com.au/guitars/electric/gibson/CountryGentleman.html

Gibson discontinued all the Atkins models a couple years ago and now the Chet Atkins endorsement is back with Gretsch....where it is alive and doing very well.

Bill,
I guess I was thinking of the ones from the '50s.
Still, Gibson wasn't making them in 2004, were they?

Pretty close to it. The last batch was made at the new Gibson plant in Memphis. I just looked on Ebay and saw a 2005 Chet Gibson model Tennesean.

The serial number on the back of the headstock will determine the date.

I have a Gibson Chet Atkins Country Gentleman guitar that I purchased 10 years ago in 1998. I bought it new for $2500. If this guitar is in fact a Gibson Chet Atkins Country Gentleman and if it is good condition then this is a very good price.

These are fairly common. I know a few guys in Canada using these guitars. They sound great!

Chris LeDrew's pic should clear it up. Most of us "old timers" associate "Chet Atkins" and "Country Gentleman" with Gretsch, but Gibson did make a Chet Atkins model -- as Bill Hatcher states -- from the late '80s into the early 2000s.

The first one I saw was Kenny Vaughan's when he was playing with Kim Ritchie and I believe he used it when he was playing with Lucinda Williams. Great sound -- but then he could make a Teisco with 2 strings sound good!

I saw Kenny Vaughn play last night! He was with Marty Stuart. Great show. He played a D18 the while night, and even sang a few. I have video. Wink

Erv, there were no Gibson "Chet Atkins" models in the 50's either - THOSE were Gretsch. And the back pads you are thinking of are Gretsch as well.

If I recall correctly...and I may not be correct...the "book" price is around $1500. Unfortunately, this isn't a popular model and values have not held up well, but if it's mint it may well be worth two grand.

These are bringing an easy $2K on Ebay.

Gibson stopped making the Chet Atkins CG in 2005. There are certain years where the guitar construction features changed including a different center section, different fingerboard markers and different switch location. That might expain the dates in the vintage guide. The earlier models have a solid maple center, heavy as heck, but a great sustain. The next version has a chromyte (balsa) center to lighten up the guitar a bit.

I have three of them. Two are first year 1987 built in the Gibson Custom shop with the Custom Shop decal on the back of the headstock. There were 200 made there until Gibson got the assembly line set up in the regular factory. These are nice guitars with a 1 3/4" nut width that makes fingerstyle playing a bot easier with the added nut width.

Erv
I had a 1968 "Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman" and it had the pad on the back of it.
Sorry I sold it to buy a '79 Gibson Les Paul Custom. Nice guitar but not worth what my "68 would be today.
