The Shift control changes the center frequency of the Midrange control, which changes that amplitude (and phase) of a band of frequencies around that center frequency. The NV 1000 (and other modern Peavey PSG amps) frequency controls are active - in other words, at 0 they do nothing, at positive values they add to the frequency content in that range, and at negative values they subtract frequency content in that range. One of the things I really like about these Peavey amps is the fact that they permit a very wide variation in tone with just a few knobs.
The general MO for a presence control is to change the amount of negative feedback from the output back into the amp, but I honestly don't know exactly how this particular circuit functions. But regardless of exactly how it functions - it controls some very subtle high-frequency content in a way fundamentally different than the Treble control. This article is pretty informative: http://home.comcast.net/~machrone/bjr/presctrl.htm
People are still claiming to improve Presence controls. For example, here's a patent link for a recent entry from Mesa Engineering: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7412064.html |

That "Paramid" EQ control is the most misunderstood and mis adjusted item in a Peavey Steel Amp. Generally it should be set around 800HZ and the Mid cut, around -3 to start. If you set the Mid to Plus it gets muddy and bassy. If you look at the suggested Peavey settings for the 1000 (or the Nashville 112 or Nashville 400 or Session 500) they all work the same way.
Some cut the mid to -6 or even more, I find that's too much with my Franklin and Lawrence 710 pickups.
My basic (starting point) settings for both my Nashville 1000 and Nashville 112 are Low +9, Mid 800HZ and -2, High and Presence +1. |

thanks for the explanations, fellas.
Jack, I've dialed in your settings as a starting point, and I like the tone. Nice and rich.
all the very best,

If I recall correctly, the High control is a shelving EQ at 6k. The Presence control is another shelving EQ at 10k on top of the High EQ. |
