did you never get a chance to see playing live on stage (peeping over his shoulder) but wish you would have? Too many great players have left us and we can only get to their music via recordings they have left.

I was just listening to some old Tex Williams recordings and wish that I would get a chance to see Joaquin Murphy perform his fantastic single string work live on stage.

How about you?

Kind Regards, Walter

The question is, which one would I not want to see? But I can't think of any offhand.

Having been there and heard it with your own ears while seeing it with your own eyes.......lends something to the overall experience, no question.

THANK GOODNESS for You Tube with some of those fabulous clips others have managed to preserve and share with us for our musical enjoyment.

I think a morale of this thread is that some of the people we admire and strive to play like are still with us, and as awesome as they are, they're basically just players, trying to make a living.

It's still not impossible to contact them and request some one-on-one time. You never know...I would imagine that some of them might be into giving a private session to an aspiring player, or a small group of players. They might be into it... y'know...work is work.

I hate to say it, but the list of greats gone by is only going to get larger as time goes on.

As for me, I'll say Speedy West.

When I was 16 years old I would go to the backstairs off the parking lot at the Riverside Ranch and listen to the band including Joaquin. (too young to get in). When I turned 17 and worked with the Ole Rasmussen Band I had to join the Union and then my Union Card got me in free to the Rancho and I could watch Joaquin. I was a big enough kid to work the Dance Halls, minded my own business, and got away with being underage. Later on, Noel Boggs was always working local clubs when not working with Spade Cooley, Cowtown, Irish World, Young Abe Atell'a and others. He was always available to watch and talk to and we beccme good friends. Speedy West and I were always good friends from the time he arrived in Sol Calif. We were both learning West Coast Western Swing at the same time and he would come over to the house and woodshed together.

I don't know how many times we drove by Buda, Tx on our way into Austin, with me saying to my wife, "We should drive on into town and meet Jimmy Day".

Never did it though. Always in too big of a hurry to get into Austin. Crying or Very sad

Well, thanks to Scotty, I've seen just about every major player, so the answer has to be, none of them.

When you think of all the great players who played the convention, who are no longer with us, you realize just hat a tremendous thing Scotty has accomplished over the years.

We are truly blessed that this man, this great man, has given us all so much.

My signature line about him for president is supposed to be funny, but in all seriousness, Scotty has brought more happiness to more people, and made a greater contribution than all the politicians combined.

It is an honor to know him. I feel very privileged to be able to call him my friend.

I think I've seen all the greats except Dewey Aderhold, better known as "Slim Idaho". He was a truly talented player who died in 1948 at only 23 years old. No doubt he would probably have been right up there with the other greats we all know today, had he lived.

Joaquin Murphy, Speedy, Big Jim Murphy, Tom Morrell, Jules Ah See, Pua Almeida, Benny, George, and Feet Rogers. Made up for all these misses with some serious hits thru the years, thankfully.

I got to be about 3 feet from Curly Chalker in '69 at the steel show at the Longhorn Ballroom. He was coming off of the current Carl Smith tunes and of course, his rendition of Danny Boy. What a great thrill that was. He was and still is "the man".

Walter,

I had the privilege of watching Joaquin four nights per week for 16 weeks at the Bostonia Ballroom in San Diego in the early 50's. He did it so effortlessly it was hard to believe.

Thanks to Scotty I have been able see almost all the great players for the last forty years, some small shows, some private shows, an all the Conventions. I was very lucky to live only a few miles from Scotty's, just a phone call away when, some of the great pickers stop off in St Louis.I have always felt very lucky to have had Scotty for a friend.

I was fortunate enough to see all the players mentioned, including Murphey, Speedy, Byrd, Julian, Leon, Garrett, Curly, and Noel.

I never got a chance to see Billy Bowman play, though. That would have been nice.

Herb,

I was honored to be able to jam with Noel a few times.

Billy Bowman had a steel just like mine on the GOO -- but for some reason they didn't sound alike.

I agree with Mike and Jerry. Scotty has made the "greats" available to the rest of us. My brother Tom and I were at the last ISCG that John Hughey was with us for. I had met Papa John before but Tom finally got to see him in person at that show. It was an experience for both of us to speak to him and hear him live. We will always be thankful to Scotty for the opportunity.
We missed this year but we'll be back in'09.

Mr. Alvin McBurney, with his Sierra made by the one and only Bill Stafford, was pure poetry in motion. He was the most gracious host I've ever met. He shared everything I asked for, but I don't believe anyone could absorb one hour of his instruction with absolute understanding. We miss him greatly and our annual visit to Sandy Utah.

And if you were fortunate enough to study under Julian, as Joe McHam and I was, you could mark your calendar complete. What a player, teacher, innovator, and man of the world. The best to say the least.
