I hope my opening remarks there, didn't turn too many of you fine folks "off".........or caused you to ignore the post as they were to vague but.....
Whenever I was around a steeler that was really GREAT, I became immediately intimidated and 'shy' if you will. JERRY BYRD really had a hold on my psyche and when I chanced to meet Lloyd Green at one of those giant steel shows, a friend of mine had to ask Lloyd for his autograph as my jaw just wouldn't work.
I reacted the same way in the presence of Billy Robinson and when talking to Howard White.
But fortunately, some of you, have had many close encounters with these great musicians and I envy each of you.
Two good Texas friends of mine have had so many truly close meetings with the stars that I'm simply amazed. Another friend from the UK has visited the States a number of times. These three individuals have actually stayed in the homes with the likes of Speedy West, Roy Wiggins, Joaquin Murphy, Jerry Byrd, etc., etc.,
Have any of YOU.........had such a wonderful experience and how did it come about? SHARE? |

I know where you're coming from Ray. For me it was the other way when I met the man, Lloyd Green. What a gracious fellow.... I remember running into him in the hall at the hotel at the 1977 ISGC. I told him what a big fan I was and if he had time to stop and chat for a while.
When I elaborated saying how much I admired his playing, he got the most humble look of gratitude on his face. He thanked me for my kind words.
Lloyd is such a kind and easy man to talk to. He demonstrates total professionalism with his humble attitude.
He has pure class, and I came away from that meeting a richer person.
Years later, likely around 1988, I called him on the phone with not much of a reason...Lloyd was the one who kept ME on the phone for 45 minutes, telling me in detail about his recording the live LP with Charley Pride in 1968.
Again, what class and just plain kindness.
I venture to guess that not only is Lloyd a musical genius but also an intellectual genius.
Both times I have talked with this man, I have come away feeling enriched. Thanks Lloyd. |

When I first met Lloyd, it was in little RCA, and he played for our session. Talking to him, he talked me into buying the LDG, which you see on my picture. Still play it. All the well known celebs are just human like we are. Met them, and have done shows with a great many of them. Priceless memories. _________________ Sho-Bud LDG, Martin D28, Ome trilogy 5 string banjo, Ibanez 4-string bass, dobro, fiddle, and a tubal cain. Life Member of AFM local 142 |
