Does anyone know what instrument is being played in the break of the old Marty Robbins' song "Dont Worry"? Could it be a string instrument (steel, for instance) through some kind of effect gismo?

Isn't that the one where the guitar amp had a busted speaker and they liked the sound, so that's how they cut it? or was that some other song??

| Bill, that's right. The speaker actually blew and the steel man kept going and made history. After that whenever the tune was played, they would apply the Bosstone fuzz. Jeff Newman told us that story. |

| I always heard it was Grady Martin on guitar, but I saw a video of it and the steel did it. Marty kept telling him if he didn't get it fixed he was fired. |

A defective vacuum tube caused the distortion. I've heard that the tube is in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

One Of the Output Tubes of a pair fell out of a socket into the bottom of the amp.
I believe Gregg Galbraith can Verify This.
Just Pull One Of the Output Tubes out of a Fender Deluxe amp and you can get the same effect.

Kelso Herston, Nashville guitarist, headed up Capitol Records in the 60's and also used to do a lot of sessions in those days. Here's what he says:

Yep,that's what I heard...the Maestro(Gibson) Fuzztone was invented by Glenn Snoddy...he figured out what caused the channel to"malfunction"and built a little box that would get that sound anytime Grady wanted it...I didn't know Grady-the only times I was ever around him he was playing with Willie Nelson and I was with George Jones...we did some shows with them about 20 years ago...I would have liked to ghermed him within an inch of his life,but he didn't ever look like he wanted to be ghermed...Gregg knew him,and may have asked him about this very thing...maybe he'll weigh in on the subject...

As an addendum to Roy's account. Marty did that song on TV with Buddy playing the guitar part on steel.
The jaw dropping expression on Marty's face was priceless. Buddy of course...just smiled.

While it is certainly true that the first "recognized" fuzz was played on "Don't Worry"
Chicago blues cats like Muddy Waters were simply turning up their small Fender Champ amps up all the way and getting a distortion like sound for their lead solos. While it wasn't technically the same thing the sound was very similar....Peter |

True, Peter, and it begs the question, why did it take until "Don't Worry" before the 'fuzz' sound gained recognition and acceptance world wide?  |
