Two in one week from Chuck!

I love having access to tools for making home recordings. I always wanted to work up Kewalo Chimes, ever since I heard Jerry Byrd’s version on his wonderful lp, “Byrd in Hawaii.” Leonard Zinn also did a great performance of the tune in the Hawaiian Room at this year’s St. Louis Convention. However, since my album was too beat up, Clint Queen sent me a CD that he made from the album. The pitch was a bit off, but I was able to correct it using Sound Forge. I was also able to use the program to slow down the recording as I tried to figure out some of Jerry’s tricky passages. When I was able to play the tune up to speed, I realized that I could never match the original recording with a Band in the Box rhythm track, so I tried using the PG Vocal remover preset to bring up the rhythm instruments and reduce the original steel guitar. Although I started out using my 6 string lap steel, I eventually went with the first eight strings of my Mullen C6th neck. No pedals or knee levers were harmed (or used). This link was really helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEzmJ41NEvY&feature=related |

Glad you like the tune. I used a program to reduce the volume of the lead instrument.

I think the plug-in does some tweaking with the EQ and adds some filters to reduce the lead instrument. It is not perfect, since there is some bleed-through, but it works for practicing. Byrd's Kewalo Chimes sure has a great backing band.
