Tommy Dorsey's recording of "Marie" has always been one of my favorite songs. Over the years playing with various bands I would play this as an instrumental. It's a great song to jam on and play in parts with the guitar player. Do any of you forumites know of any Western Swing recordings or have included it in your own library. This might be a great old song for the "Time Jumpers" to record. It fits being played usually on the C6th or A6th tunings. If you have never heard the song, it's worth researching. |

Billy, I agree with you about "Marie", it's one great tune. Do you remember the late Bill "Hoss" Huffman? That was one of Hoss' favorite tunes to play on his old Telecaster. Roy Dee and I used to twin that song a lot when we'd get together as well as "Across the Alley From the Alamo"........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Jerry Byrd recorded it. It's on the "String Dustin'"
album. The other players in the group were
Chet Atkins, Homer and Jethro.
I believe that Hank Thompson also has it on one
of his albums. |

I got to record this great old tune with Don Walser and we played it live all the time. You're right, it's a fine to tune to stretch out on.
It's on Don's Down at the Sky-Vue Drive-In CD, which was produced by Ray Benson and has some of the Asleep at the Wheel crew augmenting Don's regulars. It's still available. Here's one link, in case you're interested.

We should also acknowledge the terrific version sung by Joe Frank Ferguson with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Probably recorded in the late thirties. I would think this version established this tune in the western swing repetoire. Joe Frank had a fine, clear tenor and played great bass. I got to see him with the Original Texas Playboys several times and he sang Marie splendidly.
Billy, I just wanted to tell you that I admire your fine playing on some of my favorite records. I was just listening the other day to a Tommy Duncan collection and you were on several of tunes. So great to have you and the other seasoned veterans of the music biz on this forum.

I do this tune from time to time at the MASGA get togethers when I get a chance to go. They always have a session where you play with some of your own tracks. I have a version of "Marie" in the key of G from Herb Steiner's "Swingin' Standard Tracks". Herb's tracks are first rate and they seem to be longer than some of the others I have so that gives you more time to pick...........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |
