Hello fellow Emmons players. I think I need to replace some of the allen tuning
screws on my PP 12 string and wonder what thread they are? Also what is used
on the threads some are red and some are blue.. is that a generic thread tightener or some other products?
Some of the screws seem too loose.
Thanks |

Scott, the bolts are 6-32 X 1" with a Nylon or Teflon (not sure which) coating.

Scott,
I'm sure you are not using all these screws at one time. Remove one that your are not using to tune with, and go to your local hardware store and match the threads with a nut. Then you know for sure.
The substance on the screws is LocTite(r)(sp). The red is the more intense thread locking formula. The blue LocTite(r)(sp)is the more forgiving as it does not lock the screw as tightly. Both, of course, are designed to hold the screws in place after tuning.

Jay, actually I think it is not Loctite. I have put loctite on a bolt and let it set overnight and it is still wet the next day. It will not set up unless it is between threads. I have searched for a type that will set up but have not found it. The threads are definitely 6-32 and I think you could get a pretty good working product by going to an auto paint store and get a small amount of acrylic lacquer in the color of your choice and dip the threads into it and let it dry. Whatever you use, it should be completely dry or set up before installing the screws. Don't use loctite, lucite or anything else on a tuning screw and put it in while wet. An alternative is to put a compression spring on the tuning screw to keep it from vibrating out of tune.

I agree with Jerry, it is not Loctite.
A while back somebody posted the brand.
I believe the product was "Vibratite"
It is red and dries to the touch in a few minutes. |

Scott -
What you're looking for is 'Nylok' -
The earliest used on Emmons guitars
were the type with a groove along the
length of the thread in which was a
Nylok torque strip.
Later were the
type with the coating all the way
around the threads.
Have a look here - - > http://www.nylok.com/products_bluepatch.htm
