Has anyone really watched the "Steel Player" in Miss Jessica Simpson's Come On Over video. Had to watch it 4 or 5 times so I wouldn't watch Jessica the whole time. . They surelly could have found someone that could have done a better job of faking it.
Heck I'd of done it for free _________________ Daniel J. Cormier

Daniel,
I laughed out loud when I saw the close up of him holding the bar, it looked like it was a stinky piece of poop that he was having to pickup with his bare hand. Or maybe the bar was just really really hot.
I first saw that video flashing by on TV somewhere (then never saw it again to analyze) and wondered how that guy got such good tone with no technique. I like the lick, its got a good hook to it.
If they wanted a young handsome steel player I would have done it for free too, but I probably would have been fired from the set for not paying attention to what I was doing and only watching Jessica!

Yeah, quite obviously, he's not a steel player. Real "tour de force" songwriting, too.
"Leave your dishes in the sink, leave your ice-cubes in your drink..."
You see, I was not even aware that people were in the habit of removing ice-cubes from their drinks?
"Oh shucks, I'm really in a hurry Mr. Bartender. Lemme jus' fish these ice-cubes outta my drink before I go to make whoopie."
I think this classifies as "bubble-gum country music"

Hey out here when its 120F we put the unused ice cubes back in the freeze if they are still left after a cold one. Sometimes it adds to the flavor of the next drink.
Amazon.com has rhyming dictionaries for sale. I am sure no else has wondered about that. |

I think maybe the fantastic tone comes from the way he is pickin with his hand 3 inches off the strings. Hee Haw Ya'll _________________ Daniel J. Cormier

The only person that would know he's not a steel player would be another steel player so I don't think the video producers are too worried. If I was funding the video and I could get a guy off the street for $50.00 or a top notch session player for $2 or $300.00 or whatever they make just to sit there, I think the decision would be an easy one.
Whether the guy is a steel player or not just having
the shot of the steel in the video is certainly promoting it to the younger generation that watch the videos. |

I've got an old VCR tape made on the West Coast featuring Merle Travis, Jimmy Wakely, and others. On one of the segments there is an all girl band with a pretty little 6-string lap steel player. She was really playing up a storm until the hands didn't match the music, and after listening closely, it sounded to me that Joaquin Murphy was actually doing the playing. I don't know whether the rest of the band were all faking it or not ! |
