I saw and played Bill's guitar yesterday. It has that wonderful rich hybrid tone, and plays with amazing (but typical zum) smoothness and precision. Tuning stability is outstanding. The guitar is simply drop dead gorgeous, with fit and finish in all details that is unbelievable. It appears that Bruce has made some changes in the changer end endplate (awesome). I think I may have met the best steel guitar I've ever seen.
Congratulations Bill, may it serve you well! And congratulations Bruce on an apex instrument.

Man, what a BEAUTIFUL guitar...
I didn't think Bruce was building any lacquer finish guitars these days but that looks like lacquer over flamed maple. Wow, what a nice axe. Enjoy it!

There's no doubt it's a nice looking steel, but could someone tell me exactly what this means:

Quote:
"It has that wonderful rich hybrid tone"

According to the above, that would mean we've all just learned after all of the long, threads on tone, tone, and more tone, suddenly the question is answered.

My bet still has to be that a person couldn't tell what make or model of steel was being played behind a curtain if their life depended on it, and be accurate.

The above it NOT meant to take away from the steel or Bruce's work, in any way. It's simply a statement of what I believe to be truth.

Congratulations Bill, on your new steel. Cool

Maybe it might be time to do a "what's behind the curtain" game show poll based on short MP3 clips of perhaps 10 different guitars. A vendor or someone who has access to different brands of guitars could post MP3s of the 10 and the rest of us could vote.

I'd be interested in hearing the Zum and Hybrid Zum, Emmons push-pull, Emmons LaGrande,Rittenberry, Williams, Rains, SH0-BUD, MSA, ZB, & Kline. I realize there might be differences between one company's own guitars, but it might still be interesting.

After a few weeks the results could be posted which match the guitar with its tone as well as how many poll participants reached 90%, 80%, etc correct. Just a thought but a serious one. I for one, would probably score low on this "guitar tone"poll. steve t

Wow Bill. That's stunning!

I also though Bruce had stopped making lacquer bodied guitars. Is there a story behind the making of yours?

No story. I consider myself lucky and grateful to Bruce for doing me a favor. As far as sound goes all of my guitars have a different sound or tone. As far as the Zum hybrid goes I have played two others and one in a side by side comparison and they all sounded very similar. There was another high quality guitar also being played at that time that sounded much different.(sounded very nice but different)It does not make me play better on any of the guitars but it does sound a little different. Unforunately it still sounds like me. When ever I change guitars and use the same amp I have to adjust a few things to make it pleasing to my ears. I think that is what it is all about. Finding a sound that I like and sounds good to me.
