Another forumite contacted me about buying my Super Pro some time ago. I thought about it and decided yes, then no, then yes again. We worked a trade deal. His Mullen S-10 and $500.00 for my Super Pro.....him paying all shipping charges. I had sent him a video of the guitar and the detail was excellent, I showed and described every flaw there was. At any rate, he said he would send the Mullen with a check and asked me to hold the check until he got the 'Bud and we were both satisfied. I agreed. It took several weeks, but he finally sent the Mullen first as I was not willing to send the Sho-Bud to him first. He had several guitars and I had only the one....made good sense to me.........that way neither of us had to be without a guitar.
When the Mullen arrived, it was damaged. I took pictures of the box etc....before I started opening it until the guitar was out of it, the damage was well documented. The damage was minimal and I decided to keep the guitar and sent the 'Bud on to him. I filed my claim with UPS.
Here's where the fun starts. When a claim is filed with UPS, it is paid to the SHIPPER. My claim was to be paid to him and not me and he in return would endorse it and send it to me. Now I had a $1,588.00 claim and a $500.00 bad check in his lap waiting on both to be made good.
When he got the 'Bud, he claimed it was damaged, and filed a claim. He decided since I would be paid for his claim he would settle with me (after UPS paid) whatever difference there was between what UPS paid and what he owed me since his claim was more than mine. The difference was $213.00.
I had to wait on UPS to pay the claim to get my money. I was hot about that, because our claims should have had no effect on our original deal and he was changing it all without even asking me if it was acceptable. He owed me the $500.00 plain and simple. The claims should have been handled aside from our deal; both of us endorsing claim checks back to each other.
I don't know if he's collected on his end, but he still owes me $213.00......I still have a check for $500.00 that was never any good and I really believe he was never going to make it any good. He will not answer emails or calls, yet he is posting on Buy & Sell trying to buy things.
I've had good luck on the internet, I've done business with other forumites (J.D.Sauser and others) and I think my brother Bobby Bowman would be willing to vouch for me as one who will do what is right.
I know this individual has a story too, maybe he feels I was wrong in some way, but I never waivered from our original deal and did all that I said I would do and I didn't pull any rabbits outta my hat on him.
All I want is my $213.00, it's what is fair and right.
He told me the last time we talked that UPS would not pay the claim on his end and I needed to get another estimate. I have refused to do that until I get my $213.00......I reckon that kinda puts me on his level.......but I feel the move is justified.
I'm not telling anyone here I am all right and without fault or blame, just letting you know there is an individual who will write you a bad check.
I'll not post his name here, you may email me for it if you wish to know who it was.
Thanks for your time and, thanks for the forum b0b,
Rod

I have had really good luck with UPS in about 18 of 20 cases over the past 4 months. I've been shipping records to buys and in one problem case, UPS managed to rip off a shipping label that had been secured with 3 layers of tape. Since the tracking number was still on the package, they sent it back to the Rite Aid drugstore in my town and Rite Aid agreed to next day air it UPS RED back to the destination (CA, 3000 miles away) at no cost to me. Overall I thought that was a fair deal but I was annoyed that they wouldn't or couldn't reroute the package to the receiver without first sending it back to me. I sat for 5 days! in a depot about 20 miles from the receiver's house.
My second problem with UPS was a $432 insured package of records that UPS dropped off at the wrong street address. The people at the dropoff address claim they never saw the package (they were on vacation at the time) and the receiver (buyer) never saw it either of course. The UPS driver admitted he left it off at the wrong address ( a few houses down). I filed a claim with UPS for the $432 and they have since agreed it was their fault and I provided proof of what the buyer paid. I understand the check will be coming back to me. I don't intend to pay the buyer until UPS pays me because I just don't have that kind of money hanging around and don't have a business with any cash reserve. That's why I insured the package. So far the buyer doesn't have a problem with that. Yes I did cash his check but until all of this blows over, and UPS completes it's investigation, I don't know that the records won't turn up somewhere, so i'm sitting tight. If UPS never pays me (which sould be a crime), yes I would refund the money to the buyer, but not until all avenues are exhausted.

I ordered a new guitar last spring. Since Los Angeles is the capital of stupid people, I had the manufacturer ship it UPS "hold for pickup". This would prevent having a driver either leaving it with a dishonest neighbor, or better yet just leaving it on the doorstep until I got home.
They called me when it arrived and I went to the local UPS place, camera in hand, just in case there would have been any damage. There were no big dents on the outside cardboard box, so I figured the innards were OK (they were).

I don't know if it's available anymore, but one thing to look into when shipping a steel guitar is Greyhound Package Express. Mr. Franklin shipped my new guitar that way (long time ago) and told me they found it the safest way (least chance for damage) when he worked at Sho-Bud.

Jack - I have to agree. I have shipped packages by bus many, many times. Not one problem.

Although it is expensive, any of the air services,UPS or Fed Ex,is the safest way.I have never in my 26 years of shipping, ever had a damage when I used next day,2nd day,or 3 day select.

I've had four amps shipped to me via UPS; they damaged all of them....the worst damage was on a 2nd day air package.
The problem is not with they type of shipping you use, it usually centers around how heavy a package is......amps are heavy and that's why I've stopped shipping them through UPS.
UPS' claim process is also very inefficient....usually taking (like it did this time) about 45 to 60 days to pay for damages.
Funny how this post went to talking about UPS .
