Here is one of the best songs that Vince Gill ever recorded and has become a standard for the pedal steel guitar thanks to the spectacular playing of the late John Hughey. His solo alone is worth the price of admission!
In trying to challenge myself I am always trying to push what I can accomplish with the non pedal guitar to show what posibilites are there and how much fun it is to try to reach for something. I decided to try to play this song and here is the result.
I learned a lot working on this. John Hughey.....what can you say. One of the greatest steel guitar players ever. I discovered that the back half of his solo where he goes for all that stuff up in the ozone layer is really a tremendous Hawaiian style when it approaches the modulation. Just beautiful. I wish I could play like that.
This one wore me out.

I appreciate so much both of you guys comments. I have been working with the Leavitt tuning now for a while and have expanded it out from 6 strings to 8, 10 and now 12. On the 12 string I dropped the tuning down 1 1// steps to fatten up the tone a little.
This arrangement could be played on a 10 string and probably an 8.
Tuning from low to high on this song was
E A C# E G A B C D E F F#
The low E and A are sometime F and Bb. I tend to change the lower two strings to work with a specific key. I have not settled into a fixed tuning for the low strings yet. |

Hey Bill,
I think your set up has moved so far from
the Leavitt that you can call it the
"Hatcher Tuning" You earned it
Great Playing! _________________ Custom Tabs Various Tunings

Bill -
I kid you not. I got a chill up and down this old spine when you soared into "Hugheyland". That is truly beautiful. Congrats once again. Loved it.

Bill,
Great job as always. You're really taking the tuning to new heights.
You might want to correct your tuning though, you listed it as...
E A C# E G A B C D E F F#
but the B in the middle should be Bb. |

Mike. Thanks so much.
Leavitt is (low to high) C# E G Bb C D as you well know. Down 1 and 1/2 steps is- Bb C# E G A B. The B looks fine to me...D moved down 1 1/2 steps would B.
That should correspond to my strings (Low to high) 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. My second string which would be Bb in original Leavitt changes along with the first string to whatever I need in certain keys and certain arrangements. |

Opps! Sorry. I read it too fast. I saw the C#, E, G, B, C and D and thought that was the Leavitt in the middle. I forgot you tune it down. |
