Mozilla Foundation has released Firefox 3.0.2, on September 23, 2008.
As this update contains both critical and moderate security updates I urge you all to upgrade as soon as possible.
According to the release notes, Firefox 3.0.2 fixes some security and stability issues, a few layout problems and includes more foreign language support.
Here are the security issues fixed in Firefox 3.0.2:
MFSA 2008-44 resource: traversal vulnerabilities
MFSA 2008-43 BOM characters stripped from JavaScript before execution
MFSA 2008-42 Crashes with evidence of memory corruption (rv:1.9.0.2/1.8.1.17)
MFSA 2008-41 Privilege escalation via XPCnativeWrapper pollution
MFSA 2008-40 Forced mouse drag
After you update Firefox you must restart the browser. As usual, it will check your plugins and add-ons to make sure they are still compatible. If any add-ons aren't compatible, Firefox will offer to search for an update. Failing to find an update will result in those add-ons being disabled. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I reinstalled the new version yesterday. Now I have lost all my bookmarks, my desktop icons to web sites don't work, and the green "back" and "forward" arrow tabs in the top left corner of the screen don't work. Is all that gone forever? |

Those things shouldn't be touched at all when you upgrade to a newer version of Firefox. Something has gone wrong during the installation process. Try running System Restore to the last Restore point before you upgraded.
Firefox stores all user information in a profile folder, which is a sub-directory of your user profile > Application Data directory. Firefox settings are stored inside folders contained in the Mozilla sub-directory. Search for this directory and see if your bookmarks are backed up in one of the files or folders under Mozilla.
For Windows XP the personal profile folders are in Documents and Settings > YourLoggedInName > Application Data. You may have to unhide hidden and system files and unhide known file extensions to access the Application Data directory. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Thanks, Wiz, but my problem resolved itself when I rebooted my computer and Firefox installed the updates which had been downloaded yesterday.
When I powered up first thing this morning, I walked away and left my computer for quite awhile. I don't know exactly what happened, but for some reason Firefox didn't install the updates from yesterday. Possibly it waited for a response from me, and not receiving one did a safe mode install. Everything seemed normal when I came back to the computer, but apparently the installs hadn't gone right. Firefox only opened with a blank page, and had the problems described above. Once when I opened Mozilla, it asked me to click to start the installs. Then it said it couldn't do the installs because another version of Firefox was running, even though there wasn't as far as I could tell.
Well, that made me think everything was just acting too funny. So I rebooted to give everything a chance to start over right. Then when I started Firefox, and clicked to do the installs, everything went right. And now everything is working as it should. |

FYI, I installed the 3.02 update, and then got another notice for 3.03 yesterday. It seems there was a "minor problem" with 3.02. |

I had no problems with the process or the results of the 3.02 update.
Although I've not received any .03 notifications, sure enough a manual check shows it. "Strongly recommended".
I'll await discussion (that is to say, Wiz's comments) before doing it. |

It's always something. I don't know, I don't know! I asked 'em to be on their best behavior!
I looked and lo and behold, FF 3.03 is downloading in the background, at about 1 kb per second, on my 6 megs cable service. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

You know? 3.02 downloaded at around that speed too, despite my DSL (it averages a real-world 150-300K/sec---dunno what it's capable of.) Usually my Mozilla download speeds don't attract attention but this seemed odd, for sure.
Let us know if you blow up. If not I'll bring on 3.03. |

I did not implode, so go ahead and download the full version if necessary. It took about a half hour for me to download the upgrade. Had I just downloaded the full installer it would have taken about a half minute. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Go figure. .02 downloaded at good speed. But I got a message that the update failed and that I needed to do a complete download which also came thru fast. No problems. |
