Topic: Conflict if I install my current hard drive in new computer? |

I have a fairly new "C" drive on my computer. I can buy a new computer and have the shop intall my current drive in it. I've noticed that due to "software registration" the software on my current system seems to recognize my computer number. If I move the drive to a new faster system, will that cause a problem such as my software won't recognize my current system and then won't work? If so, is there a solution to this problem?

Mike;
You have accurately recognized the problem you are about to encounter. You will probably end up having to purchase additional licenses to reinstall these application onto a new computer. Most programs today are only licensed for one installation on one computer. Even if it is decommissioned you may have to re-license some apps.

Windows Vista has a utility to transfer some programs over from an XP or Vista computer to another Vista computer. Whether these programs require a new license is up to their manufacturers or license maintainers.

Wiz,
Under what situations (especially above) does one have to pay money to MicroSoft to transfer their OS? To help keep the answer short and sweet, lets assume the previous CPU and the newer CPU are both capable of running the same Ver/Rel of that OS. |
