Can someone tell me where to find tuners to replace the Kluson's on my MSA Semi-Classic?
I know that Bobbe mentioned that he carries something, but they are not listed on his site. I need some options - there is a tremendous amount of play in my originals. I don't have a problem with re-drilling if necessary.
Anybody have first hand experience? _________________ Bad wine is better than no wine. |

My MSA has Grover tuners.
Stewart MacDonald www.stew-mac.com has lots of tuners, including some high quality Gotoh reproductions of old Klusons |

Thank you, John. I have ordered parts for guitars from Stew-Mac in the past. I forgot all about them.
I'll take a look. _________________ Bad wine is better than no wine. |

Hi Tim. There was a thread about this maybe two months or so ago (can't recall who started it). Apparently, there are many Kluson replacements out there (moat are, in my opinion, highly overpriced because of the whole vintage thing). Unfortunately, according to that thread many that are made overseas are metric and produce a loose fit if you try to replace original Klusons with them. I am nearing the end of a semi restoration and have thought about replacing the original Kluson machines. My first inclination was to put on grovers (like my classic has). However, the distance from the center of the post hole to the one screw hole from the Kluson you would use doesn't match up. So, with a home quality drill press, it would be very difficult to get a good clean job (for me). I haven't checked the measurements for Sperzels or other good tuners. I look forward to hearing more about what you find out.
The upshot of that thread seemed to be that Gotohs have the correct diameter and should be at least reasonalby good with 15 to 1 ratio. The link to them at stewmac is below. I believe they only come in 6s so two sets needed. There is a quantity discount for three sets or more. If you decide to go with the Gotohs, please let me know. I might be interested in going in half on four sets to bring down the cost.

Saw this one go by and had to ask. I have an old MSA single neck with grovers. They are shot and needs new ones. I wrote MSA and they could not help. I bought a set that looked right from guitar center but they were too big for the existing holes. I see from the grover site and stewart -mac that many are available. Without putting a micrometer on them can anyone tell me which models fit without re-drilling?

Hi Criss, really interesting. I always assumed all Grover Rotomatics required the same hole size. From Stewmac's site, it looks like all the "Rotomatic" grovers listed would require the same hole size as they all have .390" dia. The imperials and sta tites are different. Maybe if you could post a pic of one your tuners, someone could help clear things up.
