Topic: Info on Raja steel bar ??? |

Hello, Fellow steelers, Has anyone heard of a steel bar named "Raja", and do know where I can get any info on them, and does anyone out there use one, or tryed one....Thanks

David, the original Black Rajah was around in the fifties. It was tappered from about 7/8th to 3/4ths and made of a bakelite material similar to a bowling ball. More recently Chuck Brattain has been making one called the Red Rajah and I use one alot. I have two but I don't want to sell one.
Check with Chuck Brattain on his website on the links here on the Forum. They are easy to hold, have a nice feel on the strings, and they don't diminish the tone.

| I've tried one. I liked it a lot when it was brand new, but the coating shipped off very easily, after which you would feel the chipped part catch on the strings. Sounds like Jim has had better luck with his. |

| Bob, I do know that Chuck made improvments to his bars. He first made the Red ones, then the blacks, which were harder. Now he makes the reds only, but with a double coating. I've had good luck with mine. I have heard that stainless strings wear on the bars more than nichol |

| I have both of Chuck's red and black bars....The finish continually rubs off.......Chuck is a great guy and has replaced them for me but they don't hold up. Larry |

I have a red and a black one.. I like the feel of them. I use them for a slightly less zingy tone and they feel a but lighter than my BJS.
Chuck has a couple on EBAY right now. |

| Chuck also sells finger picks coated with the red stuff. If snyone has a problem with picks slipping off, they are the answer. I bought a set a year aggo & love them. The coating does rub off where they touch when picking but it takes some effort to pull them off the fingers when you're done. Cost alittle more but worth it IMO. Andy H, |

I use those picks too, and I'd like to get a few more sets, but Chuck's web site seems to be down. Does anybody know how to contact him?

Great bars but I guess I mash down too hard. They don't last long for me but I keep buying them. I need another one right now. I had one Raja bar recoated at a fiberglass department of a boat factory to use it to get a more fretted guitar sound when I play PSG blues. It didn't last long either.
Maybe coat them with stainless steel.  |

Still work full time at my day job, build 3 or 4 lapsteel a year, just started a new SD10 pedal steel w/4 & 5 maybe 6 knees. I think it's the work that keeps me going.
