Topic: "Shelf life" of "new string sets? |

| Just wondering what one could consider to be a reasonable "shelf life" for new strings still in the pack? I order Jagwire strings through the forum, but sometimes need to purchase a set of strings locally to get by in a pinch. The "new" E-9 packaged sets available (GHS nickle-wound "Boomers") here at the music store are obviously several years old....there is very little turn over for them. Would I be better off to purchase "single" (D'Addario) electric guitar strings in the proper guages, which are probably newer, but are not necessarily "steel guitar" strings? |

I am not experienced or qualified to speak on the technicalities of metal,however, My opinion is that if the strings have been stored in a "dry" environment they should be ok for a long time.
I bought a "job lot" of strings which I guess are a few years old and I have not had any problems with them.
You could air Your concern to Your music store and perhaps persuade Him to give You a discount on a set in order to try them out.

I agree with Billy they have to be kept dry,I keep all of my loose single strings in a zip-lock bag these days...seems to keep them fresh.The music stores in Anchorage don't stock pedal steel guitar strings as a rule,One time a salesman showed me a set of Ernie Balls that were just old looking,they were kept in a back room for years? so I passed.

| Not more than ten years ago, the largest music store in the D.C. metro area still had sets of Sho-Bud strings in their drawer (not surprisingly, all C6th). They were actually rusty! |
