I have an Evans Fet 500 Custom LV that is acting funny. I turn it on and no sound, after 30 seconds or so if i play harder(maybe a coincidence) it comes on loud and clear, then after a minute or so goes to half volume, then back to no sound. I tried new cables, and checked for loose inputs, no luck. Anyone know what I'm faced with?
Thanks

Mine has a long plug with a lot of connections (I'm not an electronics whiz). Some of the connections were corroded and not working right. I'm not recommending to you to hard-solder all the connections, but that's what I did and I haven't had any problems since. |

Chas, If you're talking about that "ribbon" connection that connects to the main circuit board, Evans's Ed Buffington (RIP) told me to gently clean off those connections with ScotchBrite (the green stuff that comes in ~1/4" thick sheets). |

Does anyone know what the status of the Evans company is? I have an FET 500 Custom that I'd been meaning to send to Ed B. for the longest time. Too long, unfortunately. Do they have someone who I can trust to service an old amp now? I'd call or write them but I'm sort of shy about asking a delicate question relating to their personal loss (RIP, Ed). |

Guys,
The Evans company was alive and well a few weeks when I spoke to Scot Buffington (Ed's son). Scot is also an Electronics Engineer and has been doing a lot of the design, construction, and repair work at Evans for a long time. I wouldn't hesitate to send an amp to him for repairs. He is very much up to speed on all models of Evans amps. Give him a call. He will be pleased to discuss your problem with you. He has been very nice to me when I've had questions concerning my FET 500 LV.
Cheers!

A number of months ago, I sent my 1985 FET-500 out to the Buffingtons. I wanted them to go over it and bring everything up to original specs.
I had a couple of nice telephone conversations with John and he spoke very highly of his son. He was obviously very proud of Scot and his technical abilities. I, too, wouldn't hesitate to send my amp to Scot for repairs. _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande
