Best thing to do is send it to Ken Fox and let him install the "batteryless" mod (and also replace the Op Amps if they have not been replaced).
The battery inside is a special 3V battery and is soldered in. If it ever leaks it can cause damage to the printed circuit. With the "batteryless" mod the battery is removed and no longer needed and the user memory chip is replaced with a new chip that does not require constant voltage to maintain the memory. |

If you replace a battery you will have to removed the circuit board to properly de-solder it and replace it.
Why anyone would want a battery in there is beyond me! They all leak or will leak in time causing damage and sometimes completely ruining the device.
You can wiggle the battery back and forth and break it out. Then just unplug, discard the old memory chip and plug in the new one. New one does not need a battery.
Here is a little more detail:
Avoid wearing knit clothing when working on the unit. Cotton is more of static free clothing. Components are static sensitive.
1- Save your settings to a memory card or Midi-librarian such as Peavey Midi-Filer, Yamaha Midi-filer.
2- I have now found I can just bend/wiggle the battery back and forth to break it off, no de-soldering needed!
3- Clean up any battery residue with a Q-tip and denatured alcohol or acetone (the wife or girl friend's fingernail polish remover).
4- Remove the old chip (U502 for Profex 2) from the plug-in socket. A small flat blade screwdriver will help pry it out. Note the direction of the notch in the chip. There is a different chip number on the Transtubefex and Tubefex original memory chip (U507). Chip for Profex 1 is (U604).
5- Insert new memory chip with notch in same direction. Note the 10K resistor soldered on to the new chip keeps it happy on power up!
6- Re-install top
7- Reinitialize by holding down the "PLAY" and "GLOBAL" buttons and then apply power (use “DOWN” and “RIGHT” arrows/cursors for Tubefex and Transtubefex.)
8- Unit will say "MEMORY INITIALIZED TO FACTORY SETTINGS"
9- Release buttons.
10- Adjust view angle with global settings to desired view
11- Reload settings

Ken Fox is the man!!!
He's super great to deal with & very knowledgeable. He has saved many a Profex from an early grave with hit batteryless mod.
When I bought my Profex II, as soon as I got home I emailed and got a hold of Ken and ordered the batteryless mod & the Burr Brown chips.
I would say the batteryless mod is a "must have" for anyone who owns one of these units.

Bob Cox,
I really can't remember the price I payed for the chips from Ken,I can say that it was sooo reasonable that I bought a set for My Wife too She is the only Girl on the block with them.
She is not too sure what to do with them though.
Bottom line,Contacct Ken and buy them, they can be fitted by a numpty in about ten minutes.
By the way I am referring to Myself as the numpty...not You.
Best regards
Billy |

BGRADO, If you can do without your Profex for a little while, just send it to Ken Fox. May cost a little more overall but everything is done top notch, settings saved, no worries. He did mine several years ago, money well spent. Sold it and wished I hadn't now, but...... Think about it. _________________ Keep pickin', Larry |

BGrado,
I'm no electrical engineer, but I have made all of the modifications that Ken Fox has for the Profex II myself. I have two profex's. And unless you have had an excessive amount of acid leakage on the circuit board, it is no problem to change. He shows you on the above post exactly where the mods are to be placed and exactly how to remove the old battery and clean up any minor leakage. _________________ Mullen (Black) Pre G-2 9x7, B.L. 705 PUP's, Evans SE 200 Telonics NEO 15-4, BJS Bar, Peterson Strobo Flip, Steelers Choice Seat, Folgers Coffee and Hilton Pedals.

howdy, thanks for all your help, i can strip bike engines, and rebuild old bikes but electronics are far from my subject, even though you make it sound simple enough, will have to find some one with more knowledge, is it safe leaving it unused till its fixed?, thanks, lew. _________________ pro1,s two round fronts, one square front, sho-bud, S12, LDG,1977, built by paul franklin sen, [THE PROFESSIONAL]nice all original, bandit65, nash, 400, profex 11,match-box, 7A,DD3, delay, various accoustic guitars, amps, and other necessitys, |
