I work on occasion with a gentleman named Jerry Sires here in Austin. Jerry is old-school all the way, and has been a singing, songwriting fixture in the Austin music scene for a very long time. Jerry recently celebrated his 64th birthday with a gig at Jovita's, a pretty cool music venue in the heart of South Austin on S. 1st Street. In preparation for that gig he had a rehearsal at his house and decided to do a 'live recording' with his newly obtained (via a pawn shop) Tascam HD recorder. This was about as informal as it gets, with the band just sitting in a circle around Jerry's living room and playing down the songs while the recorder was running.

This particular song was one of several Jerry sent to me as raw .wav tracks. I imported the files into Reaper and did a quick mix, and this is what I got. If you're looking for hot licks, or dazzling musicianship, you won't hear any. In fact you'll hear some questionable note choices by the steel player Smile and some not so subtle band tuning issues. That said, I really got a kick out of how much 'fun' comes across in this recording. I think Jerry is a real gem...

Here's Jerry's web site if you want to hear some more of his songs. I particularly recommend "I Found Me a Trailer That Matches My Truck" on the "You're Gonna Be Cold" CD. The 'truck' is on the cover actually.
